Realize you are a sinner. Repent of your sins. Believe that Christ died for your sins and rose again with all power. Accept the salvation that He offers. Do your best to follow Him and His teachings and sin no more (though we all fall short). Trust and depend on Him. If an opportunity presents itself, help others, especially to find salvation themselves. I believe that's all the essentials.

And not only for Christians, but everyone.

If someone wanted to be saved, and only had a week left to live. what ought they know and do in those final hours.
Confess that they are a sinner and accept Christ as their Savior. Then live the Romans 8 life lead by the Spirit with the Rom 2:4-16 result.

The entire point of the parable of the stewards in Luke 12 is that nobody knows exactly when the time of accounting might come. The wise steward continually does what the Master wants him to be doing, so that the Master would catch him in obedience at any time.

If a Christian has been doing the right thing all along, they shouldn't have to do anything different "right before dying."

Make Jesus Christ of Nazareth their Lord and King.
Blessings.

Trust God's love and die. Memento mori. It's a blessing to come to the end of one's "self." The illusory self we create in the image of our desires must give way to the reality of our finitude and absolute dependence. Hopefully, Christians have been dying to the illusory self all along so that the moment of death is seen as the end of the struggle and the entrance into true freedom.

That being said, what is needed can happen in a moment: to give up the illusion of control and face one's need. It only takes a moment for the heart to turn in the appropriate direction, e g. the thief on the cross. Our mortality is a gift, and to face it head on with honesty puts one on the path to life. Luke 17:33

Don't rely on people's suggestions. They are well meaning, but they could be wrong. I admit that myself.
So go directly to the Word of God. Find out what He said about the matter.
There are just a few scriptures that you can use to be saved and KNOW IT!

Here is a scripture that gives you exactly what you are looking for. It tells you exactly what you have to know to be saved. It specifically says "by this you are saved."

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV
1. Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2. By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4. And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

So there are the three things by which you are saved:
First, Christ died for your sins

Second, He was buried

Third, He rose on the third day.

I do not know of any verses that are so clear and concise. This is in context - He says THIS is the gospel by which you are saved.
No if ands or buts. Memorize this simple gospel, and be aware that it has saved you. If you were on a desert Island with nothing but this verse, it would get you saved. When the devil comes to you and tempts you to doubt, hit him with these verses "GOD SAID..."
When you take you last breath, rehearse these verses in your heart and mind. And know that you are a heartbeat away from heaven.
Of course there are many other things to learn and ways to grow. But this is what gets you saved.
Peace and believe!
