Will atheists and leftists condemn this attack, given that the victims were Christians?

Certainly. I condemn this murderous attack. I condemn all the murderous attacks on schools and houses of worship that I've posted about.

It's kind of an odd question since many 'leftists' are also Christians. And very few people are 'pro-school/church shootings'.

Why wouldn’t we? I find atheists and “leftists” much more compassionate than the Christians I’ve known.

No, what would you suggest to address the problem? You do agree that this is a problem, right? If taking guns away won't work, what do you think will?
I think and it may not have mattered in this case, but encouraging people to say something if they feel something is up. I have noticed in several cases people will later admit that the suspect was behaving oddly or had made statements that hindsight being 20/20 should have raised flags. Frankly, I think at this point with literally millions of ars out not withstanding the fact that actually "assault weapons" probably take the fewest lives of all firearms and certainly take fewer lives than handguns. I think at this point the mistrust of the government is so high that trying to remove millions of guns by force would take more lives than it would ever hope to save. In the nearly 20 years since the assault weapon ban lapsed there have been I saw recently 20 million Ar-15s in this country along with probably other assault style weapons I truly feel that if they tried to remove those weapons by force first of all good luck getting millions of guns off the street when the drug war has been going on for decades and has only gotten worse and second of all if that were tried at best I would expect wide spread civil unrest and at worst civil war. Clearly this would costs more lives than the few it would save.

Along with more resources put into mental health care with that should come the encouragement to seek it if needed as right now in many circles those seeking mental health treatment are seen as weak. This would be especially helpful since more than half of all gun deaths are by the person's own hand even if he or she ( which is most often the case has no plans of taking anyone else with them.

Lastly, I feel that the laws that are on the books concerning guns such as enhancements for their use during violent crimes should be enforced. Many times for whatever reason violent criminals are given light sentences because enhancements are removed or the DA just does not want to charge it or whatever the case is

Oh! I wish you could come to our church... (we do have the entire political spectrum, but we are pretty much all believers, and I think you'd like what you see)

There's not going to be any legislation that will move the needle by any significant degree in the next 10 years.

"The bell can't be un-rung", and the guns are already out there, and they're not going to magically stop working because a "moving forward" law is passed.
I agree - I'm just trying to encourage conversation on the topic. People jumping into a thread about a mass shooting just to say "Well, taking people's guns isn't gonna work!" - when no one has even suggested it - isn't helpful. If all we talk about is what won't work, then nothing will ever be done.

The attack marks the 89th shooting on K-12 school grounds in 2023, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database.

89.

Anyone who doesn't weep at stats like this is brainwashed by the gun lobby. I don't think there's any other possible explanation.

If all we talk about is what won't work, then nothing will ever be done.

But that's the problem, people suggest ideas appeal to people who have seen too many Steven Seagal movies and not reality.

The conversations from the US left are always magazine capacity restrictions, and "ban guns that look scary", and "banning XYZ type of ammo"...those are largely ineffective and irrelevant.

...and largely impossible in a country that has a gun culture.

This is what the US needs...but people need to understand that it's not going to be reflected in the statistics until 20 years from now (at the earliest). Trying to apply UK or Aussie gun control logic to the US is a fool's errand...those are nations that didn't have a deep gun culture. We need to apply the approach of another nation that had a gun culture, but managed to make it a safe one. Some on the US-left would be resistant to a gun control framework that still allowed people to have "the scary guns like AR-15's", but anything else isn't gonna pass.

This has a lot more to do with mental health and societal problems than it does about guns

new gun laws give the impression that politicians are "doing something" about the violence. They aren't. Chicago had an outright handgun ban for decades, and some of the strictest gun laws and background checks in the country, and gun violence was epidemic.

I am confused. If this was a biological female who trans to a man, why are they now calling her a women. I thought that was transphobic???
I thought the new rule was to call her a him, and to fail would be hate speech.
Wish someone would nail down these new rules.

What we know so far

  • At least three children and three adults are dead after a shooting Monday at the Covenant School, a private Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, that teaches preschool through 6th grade, police said.
  • The shooter, who was identified as a 28-year-old Nashville woman, was killed during gunfire with police, authorities said. Her identity and motive is yet to be confirmed.
When this news broke, my phone went nuts from my family members. The school, Covenant, is a private school associated with a Presbyterian Church on Hillsboro Road in Nashville. I was working at a private school, associated with a Presbyterian Church on Hillsboro Road at the time of the shooting.. but it was a different school, about 2 miles north. My family didn't realize that at first.

One of the victims was closely associated with someone in our office.

To borrow a song lyric, "why don't we dump'em people, to the bottom of the sea, before some ole' fool come around here and want to shoot you or me."

Other way around. Guy pretending to be woman.

Because if there's one thing women are known for....it's shooting up schools.
