What we know so far

  • At least three children and three adults are dead after a shooting Monday at the Covenant School, a private Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, that teaches preschool through 6th grade, police said.
  • The shooter, who was identified as a 28-year-old Nashville woman [ETA: apparently a trans man, having adopted a male name and pronouns], was killed during gunfire with police, authorities said. ... identity and motive is yet to be confirmed.

People are crazy. Honestly I am a little shocked she did not kill more than that not because it is at all good that six people were killed but because with three firearms could have been a lot worse.

People are crazy....
Some are.
Others are quite stable, but get caught up in some malign value system or ideology.

But always there's some guns available to you without much fuss in the USA.

and sense we have literally about as many guns as we do people in this country rounding them all up would be, stupid, a waste of money not to mention violent ( as people do not trust the government.)

What would you suggest then? Personally, I'm not willing to just roll over and accept this as the price of Freedom™.

Im glad we can dispense with "rounding up all the guns" right off the bat, as its not something I would advocate.

That's quite the leap you made there. Nobody mentioned "rounding them all up".....

The attack marks the 89th shooting on K-12 school grounds in 2023, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database.

March 27 is the 86th day of the year (87th in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar; 279 days remain until the end of the year.

Only 279 more shootings to go for the year...

Why do I suggest it is a waste of time and money because when there are as many guns as there are there is just no way you get 300 million+ of anything off the streets they have tried for years with drugs still has not happened black markets make things worse in that respect. Why do I suggest there would be violence because many people do not trust the government and therefore would not give up their guns peacefully.

This dude's comment about "thoughts and prayers" makes a mockery of the lives that were wasted. He's part of the problem, as are all who have glorified guns as if their faith depended on them. Shame on him and those on the Christian right that support the worship and proliferation of guns, eschewing any regulation that might help.

No, what would you suggest to address the problem? You do agree that this is a problem, right? If taking guns away won't work, what do you think will?

Police say they've found the shooter's manifesto

Police have located a manifesto and a map associated with the shooting at the Covenant School, according to Metro Nashville Police Department Chief John Drake.
"We have a manifesto, we have some writings that we're going over that pertain to this date," said Drake at a Monday afternoon press conference. "We have a map drawn out of how this was all gonna take place."
He added that the school was the only location targeted by the shooter.

I've been reading stories online about this today. In the comments sections people are quickly getting into their tribal corners on this tragedy. It's sad because the seven lost lives are already an afterthought. Liberals are criticizing Christians and right wing extremists are blaming the liberals for attacking Christians, while at the same time attacking transgenders. I can't even participate in the cesspool of hatred I've seen. I feel for the families suffering from this unthinkable loss. Thank you for a comfortable place to vent.

I can sympathize with your position, however, the best anyone can hope for is a revamp of laws that will *maybe* have a positive impact in 40-50 years.

There's not going to be any legislation that will move the needle by any significant degree in the next 10 years.

"The bell can't be un-rung", and the guns are already out there, and they're not going to magically stop working because a "moving forward" law is passed.

And getting people to not want to have them is a tough sell when there's already so many out there.

I think of what I've heard both Ice T and Killer Mike (I know, and unfortunate name for this particular discussion) said in interviews.

"If guns are already out there, and everyone else already has one...do you want to be the only one without one?"

And I must admit, that somewhat mirrors my position on it. I'd be more than happy with laws that would mirror the Czech Republic, where there's rigorous testing and licensing (including getting a clean bill of mental health from your physician) in order to own and carry a gun. But that's largely a preventative measure and not a prescriptive measure for a "cat that's already out of the bag". If all of the criminals and far-right nutjobs already have them, and there's no realistic path to take them all back, I don't want to be the only one walking down the street at night with just pepper spray.
