Really?
Well, thats exactly
Jesus had already given the apostles power to "tread on", quite a while back when he sent them out. They could even drink poison and be just fine.
And it was at Pentecost that they were "clothed with power from on High"......so that is the anointing for service, as CLOTHES are on the outside, not the inside.... So there is that anointing.
John 20:22, is The Holy Spirit being given.....not an anointing BY the Holy Spirit.
Being anointed by the Spirit is to be given the Holy Spirit for a particular service ie prophet, king. This is the "clothes on the outside", using your analogy. They were not simply given power, but the Spirit Himself.
Psalm 51:11
Do not cast me away from Your presence, And
do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
To be baptized by the Spirit is to be given far more than an anointing for service. When you are baptized you are indwelt bodily (
1 Corinthians 6:19 note: "in" you, not "on" you), you are given a gift, you are filled with the Spirit not to mention all the other things He does like justification, reconciliation, positional sanctification etc.
John 20:22 is Jesus giving the Disciples the Holy Spirit like the prophets of old were given the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Spirit didn't happen until Pentecost that is when they became the Body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:13
For by one Spirit we were all
baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
As far as your 'tread on" thing, I assume you mean the following and as noted there is no giving of the Holy Spirit, only authority.
Luke 10:19
Behold,
I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
A lot of what we have discussed regarding the Holy Spirit and His ministry is elementary and you think yourself a teacher of the word? I find that very disturbing.
