It is not clear if she knew what this cake represents or maybe she just thought it was pretty.

Yeah, private schools can do as they please. Limit whatever speech from their students both on and off campus. This is known.

From the story, it seems like this was probably more like the last straw that led to her expulsion, as she had previously been cutting class, and bringing an e-cigarette with her to school. Still, if I were her parent, I might be asking the administration the same thing: since when can my child not have a rainbow cake or wear a rainbow sweater because of what other kids might think it means? Did anyone think to stop and ask the child what they meant to her? Irrespective of whether or not the school is within their legal right to do so (I wouldn't contend that, since they're a private school), it seems like a pretty hasty decision to go this far for what seems like PR reasons. (Can't have the parents of other students thinking that they're 'going soft' on...cake.)

I went to a High school that was 85% Jewish run by Holocaust survivors. So it was different from the way Christian schools are run today.

She probably didn't know. It's just rainbow coloring... That type of thing is still seen as for children because it's pretty.

As an aside, I've seen various clothing etc for adults that have rainbow coloring and I see no reason why adults can't wear stuff like that - even if the intent is LGBTQ because since when do they get to determine what colors the rest of us can wear?

It's just colors.. traditionally seen as the colors of the rainbow and having a Christian connotation because of Noah's rainbow, God's promises.

LGBTQ doesn't get to steal the rainbow. That's my thinking anyway.

I wonder if the people running the school have ever visited the Answers in Genesis website. AiG is putting a lot of emphasis on the rainbow. Ken Ham, the director of the organization, is trying to remind people of God's original purpose in creating rainbows in the first place. Here is an example: New Rainbow-Themed AiG Resources

She'd been meeting with a counselor once a week since October to talk about a book written by an ex-lesbian, so something else had been going on. Her mother was aware of this. So there is more to the gayness part of the story and mom wasn't helping by getting the cake or posting it where it would be seen by people at the school, students, parents, etc.

I read that differently. I thought them giving her the book was more in response to other students' uncomfortableness with her perceived sexuality, rather than her having made it explicit to them or the administration by 'coming out' (since "perceived sexuality" is the phrase that her mother used in the article). So it sounded to me more like the problem was that the kids were uncomfortable with her because they thought that she's gay, which is kinda par for the course when it comes to 15 year olds, unless they've changed substantially in the 25 years since I was that age. So I wouldn't necessarily put much stock in that.

If it were possible to get expelled based on what other kids in your school think about you, then I imagine I would've gotten expelled approximately a million times between about fifth grade and the end of high school, and that would've all been without the aid of baked goods of questionable sexual orientation!

Maybe Christians should adopt a black/gray rainbow theme so they can honor Gods message to Noah while avoiding problematic associations with homosexuality.

How pathetic and sad that would be. A sad bow for homophobic Christians, afraid of sharing a symbol with "the gays".

I would suggest something more like:

I like that picture. If I put that on my wall. My aunt would criticize me. For using the rainbow and cross. To promote gay rights. When I wouldn't do that.

Agreed. I believe she's a lesbian. The school found out. And tried to stop her from being lesbian. And she knows she's a lesbian. And no book is going to tell her, that she's not a lesbian.

Again weird priorities, weird aesthetics.

Also, why do you care what your aunt thinks?

Sincerely though.

Don't go with the sadbow idea I was replying to please, I can only make so much fun of a group of people.

I also made a quick artistic interpretation:

I agree. But it's been stolen nonetheless.
