(as for Foster: During his 22 years at Fermilab, he participated in several projects, including the design of equipment and data analysis software for the CDF Detector, which were used in the discovery of the top quark, and the management of the design and construction of a 3 km Anti-Proton Recycler Ring for the Main Injector")

I think he got it backwards, my understanding is that the Fields Medal was awarded to Santos/Devolder (whichever is his actual last name) for his imaginary work with numbers. Though maybe it was his imaginary work with imaginary numbers.

Santos has issued amended filings that, on the face of them, state that he did not personally lend himself all that money, leaving the actual source murky and probably illegal.
But in two of the new filings with the Federal Election Commission, boxes indicating that loans of $500,000 and $125,000 had come from personal funds were unmarked.
“It could be that this is the single sloppiest bookkeeping of any candidate that we’ve ever seen,” Libowitz said. But he said if Santos didn’t provide the money for the loans, it raises questions about whether it came from a prohibited source.
While candidates can contribute – or lend – an unlimited amount of their own funds to their campaigns, it is illegal to accept a six-figure contribution from another person. It also is against the law for a corporation to donate a sum of any size directly to a congressional candidate.

Looks like he's trying to make the "false statements" aspect of potential charges go away. Given the availability of corrections to filings (that happen all the time) he might be successful here. On the other hand the actual funding seems hinky as all get out. He won't be able to make that go away, but the investigation is likely more difficult and time consuming.

In the letter sent to the House Committee, Mr Myers alleges that he was alone with Mr Santos in his office on 25 January when the congressman invited him to karaoke and touched his groin; the congressman also allegedly asked if Mr Myers had an account on Grindr, a popular queer dating app.
