Actress Alyssa Milano is embroiled in another controversy after taking to Twitter to reveal she's sold her Tesla in protest at Elon Musk's purchase of the firm.

Seemingly oblivious to the irony of how she announced the news, the motormouth former Charmed star, 49, wrote: 'I gave back my Tesla. I bought the Volkswagen ev.'

'I'm not sure how advertisers can buy space on Twitter. Publicly traded company's products being pushed in alignment with hate and white supremacy doesn't seem to be a winning business model,' she added.

Over the weekend numerous Twitter users mocked her purchase of a Volkswagen by pointing out the historical association between the auto company and Nazi Germany.

VW was established as a German state-owned automobile company in 1937, while the country was under the leadership of Hitler's Nazi Party.

I mean, I get the humor of this. But hopefully people can see the difference between taking action (I use that word lightly) against a guy doing something right now versus thinking that buying a car will somehow send money back in time to help Axis powers win world war 2.

But by some of their own rules, isn't it perfectly in the realm of "acceptable" to take action against things/people from the past that aren't currently causing any problems?

If people are going to still justify things like ruining someone's life now for a decades old joke they told, defacing statues of Lincoln, or still getting upset about cities and holidays named after Columbus, shouldn't they be held to their own standards just a bit?

I would nominate this as the worst Tu Quoque fallacy of the year, except that it doesn't even work on that level.
I think the meme (in order to be relevant) is contingent on her criticism actually being valid. There are plenty of valid criticisms one could make about Elon Musk, hers wasn't one of them.

Her whole tweet was an attempt to link him to white supremacism and hate. Has he actually espoused either of those values?

Or was she just virtue signaling and parroting back the sentiment of "anyone who doesn't sufficiently censor the other side must be affiliated with white supremacy"?

How about criticising something that is happening right now?

Is that soon or already too late?

Why does that rule only get applied one-directionally?

For instance, why is it that certain people can build entire narratives around criticizing things from the distant past that have little to no relevance to present day, but then when they break their own rule, the onus is on the other side to "keep it current otherwise it's irrelevant".

Are we talking about certain people or about Alyssa Milano?

Because your OP seems to be about Milano.

And Ford was owned by an antisemite. So what’s the point?

Ford was pretty good for black people though. Not only with equal employment very early on, but the Ford Motor Company also fostered black-owned dealerships in the 40s...when GM wouldn't even sell Cadillacs to black people. Ford's reputation among black people was so positive that I was an adult before I learned he was also a rabid anti-semite.

You get used to it. I have long since made peace with the fact that no matter what germany does, someone waves a picture of our current chancellor with a hitler beard because of it.

I don't know. Who are these they and where can I read their rules?

If it’s any consolation, I get it too sometimes just for being Argentinian. Like that’s how bad it is that even countries not involved get skewered over the whole Nazi thing. Then I also get it for being a neocolonialist American.

In any case, I think you guys have come to terms with your past far better than the US has with its sordid history.
