I sold my birthright like Esau 2 years ago is there any point in hope?

Context: 2 years ago, I "came to the faith" (read the Bible) and shortly after dropped out of the faith, using a tragedy to fall back into my immorality. Although I didn't know that I had sins to repent of nor a savior to accept nor a hell to fear nor a heaven to long for I abandoned God.

Now I've come back and while I came to be saved from my sins, I recently came across Hebrews 12:16 and am wondering if there is any point in hope. I betrayed Him completely and utterly. I sold Him. I do not feel the Holy Spirit in me. Is there hope, or should I give up?

Absolutely not. The Lord always forgives if you come to Him with a repentant heart. But coming to faith doesn't mean that you read the Bible. It means that you surrender your life and your will to Him. That is when you are born again and forgiven. The Esau reference doesn't apply unless you reject God completely.

Now is the time to humble yourself and accept His grace and forgiveness. As you repent of your sin, you will come to recognize the Holy Spirit in you. It is not a feeling, it is the knowledge of God's truth.

There's plenty of hope.

Although I didn't know that I had sins to repent of nor a savior to accept nor a hell to fear nor a heaven to long for I abandoned God.

I think (hope) the author of Hebrews was speaking of leaders who were far more advanced and had gifts of the spirit, perhaps even priests in the Christian faith who renounced in those verses. It doesn't sound to me like you had much of an inkling before based on what you wrote.

13 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

The first seed planted may not have taken root, but it sounds to me as though God may have tilled your ground a bit in the interum ;) He tends to do that. For some I suppose the Sower might visit only once, but not many. For most he casts seed repeatedly through the seasons of our lives.

I happen to have one here. *hands you a seed* Take it, it's yours :)

Do you have OCD?
The devil likes to beat up people with OCD with verses like that.

If that is true and you want that to change, get aggressive against the OCD by
  1. getting under the care of a psychiatrist &
  2. going to a church that is good at dealing with mental illnesses.

Heb 12 warns against rejecting God's mercy and kindness (so also does Heb 6) - because that can lead to a hardened heart that is not even willing to entertain the Spirit's call to repent.

Do you feel the Holy Spirit convicting you of sin and calling you to repent? If so - don't get mixed up in the idea of "second guessing God again" - rather submit to the Holy Spirit's leading - go ahead and repent and accept Christ as your Savior. And don't look back. Nothing doubting.

Now having done that - read carefully 2 Thess 2:1-10 - cultivate a "Love of the Truth" as a born-again Christian.

I don't know. My thoughts are often mangled by my fear of hell but I'm tired of hurting people and myself and I hope one day I'll shun sin out of fear of hurting God. I don't want to go back to my old life but I know if He doesn't save me it's a losing battle.

Jesus owns the birthright, so you can't sell it.

If you love God, He will love you. That's all it takes! Don't worry about things which you are not confident to sort out yourself. He is an expert at sorting impossible things out, He has been doing that since history first began. Your in safe hands.

Trust and obey for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey!

He knows how to do His job. So don't spend any time worrying about that or wondering if just maybe now is the time when He will walk away.

A person riding a bike that constantly looks at the tires to see if maybe they will burst at any moment -- is doomed. They need to look at the road and trust the tires.

Counting your mistakes also does not help. As in that same analogy the bike rider does much better by looking at the road and responding to changes - rather than ignoring what he sees and only focusing on his past mistakes.

Take Christ "with you" rather than questioning His commitment to guiding you safely to heaven.

Take Him with you by being focused on things above, focus on Christ, ignore Satan's doubt-generator that he loves to turn on next to your ear.

You might recall the Scripture in Mathew herein. Also, you will experience chastening from Christ if He loves you. Forgiveness is a huge part of Christ. If it wasn’t, few if any would be saved.
Matt.18
  1. [21] Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
  2. [22] Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

We both suffer in different ways, but God has not forgotten me and He has not forgotten you either!

A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. (Isaiah 42:30)

The Lord is both tender and merciful. He has been that way to me and I am sure that He will also be tender and merciful to you as well.

If you feel guilty for wrongs you've done, that's a good sign. It means your conscience is working and you can repent.

Here's what you need to read: 1rst John chapter 1 verses 8-10.

When you confess in faith, you are cleaned and restored.
