God So Loves The World, But There Are Those Whom He Hates

Does The God of Love Also Hate?

  • Yes, He will destroy the wicked and cruel oppressors and shedders of innocent blood

  • No, His Love is Unconditional

  • I never thought about it, because I was always taught "God Is Love".

  • God can hate and Love the same person at the same time.

  • "God loves everyone, but he does not love everyone equally."

God sees us as many people.
1)The evil person in us full of sinfulness and sins we have done and do.
2)The good person in us that cares for others
3)The person that rejects him even defies him leading others away from him
4)The person that we could be in Christ if we choose to.

God can hate #1, love #2, hate #3 even more and in Christ his love is complete.

For God to love us while we are sinner, and reject him, as an enemy doesn't condone our sins, and rejection and enmity towards him for we can love people around us and hate things that they do. A parent can still love their child who murders someone even though they hate the murder itself.

In the end (to God) we either become the sins we do or are freed from them and God hates sin so much that he bans it from heaven totally. Does he love people suffering in Hell? yes and he hates their sin also and is saddened because people in hell no longer can be in Christ.

There are different types and intensities of both love and hate, God hated what some of the most evil people have done but the option of salvation through Jesus was still there for them till the end of their lives.

The way I see it, wickedness is wanting to believe bad about others.
The wicked in the scriptures as referenced in the OP,
are those who are cruel oppressors,
who victimize the poor the widow the orphan.
Those who shed innocent blood.
I sometimes believe bad things about others and the Holy Spirit disciplines me to repent and rely on the mind of Christ,
to be renewed in the Spirit of my mind.
Paul speaks of this as bringing every thought captive to the
obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10)

We are judged by every idle word, and of course our actions
will speak for themselves.

Matthew 12:
36
But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give an account of it in the day of judgment.
37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.
1 Timothy 5:
24
Some men’s sins are clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later.
25 Likewise, the good works of some are clearly evident, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.

Jesus said the following:

Luke 14:26
If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.

Now the question is this. Is Jesus asking us to literally hate my wife and family or is Jesus saying in comparison to your love for Me is should look like we love them less ?

The answer is love them less. One of the definitions of hate in scripture is to love less.

miseó: to hate
Original Word: μισέω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: miseó
Phonetic Spelling: (mis-eh'-o)
Definition: to hate
Usage: I hate, detest, love less, esteem less.
HELPS Word-studies
3404 miséō – properly, to detest (on a comparative basis); hence, denounce; to love someone or something less than someone (something) else, i.e. to renounce one choice in favor of another.

Lk 14:26: "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate (3404 /miséō, 'love less' than the Lord) his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple" (NASU).

[Note the comparative meaning of 3404 (miséō) which centers in moral choice, elevating one value over another.]

Here is a good principle to follow. Only words in their context can give them meaning on how they are being used in a sentence , paragraph or chapter.

A text without the context is a pretext for a proof text. Some people are experts at proof texting their dogma and doctrines of men. I should know since I was a calvinist for over 4 decades. I know firsthand how that works.

hope this helps !!!
I do not have an issue with that definition, but is God saying the same thing when He hates Esau and Loves Jacob?
Is hate the opposite of Love?

For me looking at this through the eyes of man which is all we can do. Hate (the meaning of the word) is not the same for God. Everything we see does not even begin to touch what God sees in the hearts of man. Forgetting that Satan is the one that started all this and man has been ever since lied to. If you were a judge you have to take that into account. You don't send your son into this world to save the righteous the good but the ungodly the wicked the unrighteous. Those are the ones He came to save. Yes yes all have sinned.. there is none righteous but you know what I am saying.

If GOD told you to love your enemy then we know He first loved them far greater then we ever can. We don't even understand the word love forgiveness. We cast our family under the buss if they just teach some doctrine we don't agree with or live better then we do. So in the end there will be so many in heaven from every tribe every nation that no man can count and He can't lie.

Those who shed innocent blood.
I believe that Cruelty, oppression and all such spiritual deviancies are based upon a corrupt image of god (the god of this world). I believe this false image was introduced in the garden by the serpent.

I sometimes believe bad things about others and the Holy Spirit disciplines me to repent and rely on the mind of Christ,
to be renewed in the Spirit of my mind.

"for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh".

The Holy Spirit has to correct me too. Just to be clear, I said wickedness is wanting to believe bad about others. So as to say there is a difference between believing bad things about others, and wanting to believe bad things about others (gossip and negative prejudice).

"There are six things that the Lord hates, and the seventh is an abomination of His soul;"

The Hebrew word for hate here is indeed the hate we refer to in English (שנא). So yes, the Lord does hate.

Having been the victim of false witnesses and liars before, I am thankful that the Lord hates them too.

I believe the paradox of the fact that the God of Love can also hate, can be reconciled to some extent by the fact that God is both perfectly Just and perfectly Merciful, or Three in One or Divine yet human. Our human understanding of perfect justice has no space for mercy, yet God is merciful. Likewise a system of mercy all the time would be unjust, yet God is perfectly merciful too.

This has been His expectation since the covenant with Abram.
Genesis 18:19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall be shomer over the Derech Hashem: to do tzedakah and mishpat; that Hashem may bring upon Avraham that which He hath spoken [promised] of him.

Psalm 89:14 Righteousness and judgment
are the foundation of Your throne;
Mercy and truth go before Your face.

I think one of Abraham's most admirable traits, was his love & hospitality for strangers. It is in stark contrast to Sodom and Gomorrah, whose last "sins" prior to being destroyed, were inhospitability to strangers and in fact they sought to attack them.

Furthermore, the context of the narrative was just after Abraham's circumcision. Who wants to be hospitable after an operation? Abraham did.

The Hebrew word for meal "ארוחה" shares the same root with the word for guest "אורח"

One day, we too will be strangers and pilgrims knocking on Heaven's gates. For this reason I believe that hospitality to strangers - including would-be immigrants (of all types) is a good deed that should be emulated. With the same measure we use, God will apply to us.

From one of my early blog posts.
Titus 1:8 Be a lover of hospitality.
1 Peter 4:9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

For many people the mention of hospitality calls to mind Martha
Stewart more than the Gospels. While it is worthy to mention the
value of opening your home to others, there is a bit more being
conveyed in these words.
The word being translated as hospitality actually means friend of strangers. [philoxenos]
The word strangers refers to resident aliens, minorities, and sojourners in the land.
In other words, these scriptures are dealing with the age old problem of ethnicity, prejudice and racism.
Do you really think that will ever be properly dealt with outside of Christ?

Sadly and shamefully in Israel there is a movement gaining momentum to, for example, expel Arabs from the land. We have not even buried all the Holocaust survivors yet.

Exodus 22:20
https://www.chabad.org/library/bible_cdo/aid/9883/jewish/Chapter-22.htm
And you shall not mistreat a stranger, nor shall you oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. You shall not oppress any widow or orphan. If you oppress him, [beware,] for if he cries out to Me, I will surely hear his cry. My wrath will be kindled, and I will slay you with the sword, and your wives will be widows and your children orphans.

It is clear from the context here, and the narrative of Israel being in Egypt, that hospitality here is, as you say, extended to sojourners or foreigners or resident aliens in the land, because Israel was as such in Egypt for a time. It is a pretty serious curse that comes along with mistreating strangers, widows and orphans.

Ezekiel 36:26
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit will I put within you, and I will take away the heart of stone out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.

Pray that God will do as He promised - soon! - and give Israel hearts of flesh and not stone (which represents the unyielding law)

Please respond to the poll friend, or suggest an additional choice.
Hi :)

I am not sure what wording I would use for poll choices. But I will try. Actual poll questions are in blue italics.

But first I would offer > if God "hates" someone, this can have a very different meaning, than if some human of Satan's kingdom and evil spirit hates a person.

So, my first question . . . just trying, here > could be sort of rhetorical >

"Does God hate certain people, in the way that Satanic people hate people?" no

"According to John 3:16 > does God hate people, meaning He is very displeased with them, though He deeply and unconditionally loves those people enough so He sent His own Son to die for them?" yes

In Luke 23:34 we have how Jesus prayed,

"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do."

And with this we have >

"The Father who dwells in Me does the works." (in John 14:10)

So, going by these two scriptures > "Did our Father in Jesus love very evil people by having Jesus pray for those people right while they were still actively hating and torturing and murdering Jesus on the cross? And was He at the same time hating those people, in the sense of being so very displeased with them?" yes

And, in the light of 1 Timothy 4:10 >

"For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe?" (1 Timothy 4:10)

Question > "Does God hate people . . . meaning being very displeased with them . . . right while He as 'the Savior of all men' is also loving them by doing them some sort of good?" yes

The next question is in the light of these scriptures >

John the Baptist says, "he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." (in John 3:36)

And with this we have, in Ezekiel 33:11 that the LORD says >

"I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live" (in Ezekiel 33:11).

And we have how love "hopes all things", in 1 Corinthians 13:7.

So, in the light of these scriptures >

"Can a mother be extremely angry at her child who is an addict and destroying her family's life, yet love the child by still having hope for that child to do better? And, like this, can our Father be full of wrath against an evil person, yet love that evil person, by having hope for him or her to repent rather than die and go to hell?"

For another question  ¿? > we have how >

"God resists the proud," in James 4:6 and also in 1 Peter 5:5.

So, a question to go with this > "While God is hating the proud person, meaning He is so displeased with the proud one, can God also be loving that same person . . . therefore using resistance to help keep the proud person from getting into much worse trouble? Likewise, do loving and caring parents love their displeasing children, by resisting them so they do not get themselves killed or spending their lives in jail?"

The basis for the title and poll is rooted to the scriptures
posted in #1. The wicked that the Lord hates are cruel
oppressors of mankind, shedders of innocent blood.
These scriptures say that these men will be destroyed,
as an act of the righteous judgment of God against all
such as carrying out these acts. God's hatred is founded
upon His Righteousness and Judgment. See post #27

The basis for the title and poll is rooted to the scriptures
But you are using scriptures from before when Jesus came and so suffered and died for "enemies" (Romans 5:10).

And we have how the LORD does not take pleasure in the death of wicked people > Ezekiel 33:11. Why? Because He loves them, though He is so displeased with them, that He will destroy them . . . if they do not repent.

And we have how Paul wants us to "first of all" pray for any and all people > 1 Timothy 2:1-4 > "for all men", he says. So, to me this means to in prayer love even ones whom God hates . . . what He knows He means by this.

So, what God means by your chosen scriptures is what we need to feed on.

Plus, we have how the Jews wanted to forsake the LORD and have King Saul. But Samuel still would pray for . . . love . . . those who could come to such destruction > 1 Samuel 12:23.

So, yes I see how God can "hate" evil people, but love them . . . as scriptures mean to God.

The fact that He "hates" such people and intended to destroy them magnifies how much He, instead, has had mercy on us, by having His own Son die for us. And then . . . actually . . . still He destroys the wicked, by having us die to self so we become like Jesus. So He has destroyed those evil ones who we used to be! With such perfect hatred, then, He has done those evil ones out of existence, and replaced them with us in Jesus.

The 'enemies' that we are to love and pray for has been
clearly defined by the Lord, and needs no speculation.

Matthew 5:
11
Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.
12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 10:22 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.
1 Peter 4:
12
Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you;
13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.
14 If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.

There are many other examples. We are not our own. We do all
things for His Name sake and His Glory. His enemies are our enemies, and we should show love and pray for them.
This has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO with cruel and malicious
tyrants, those who oppress and afflict and shed innocent blood.
These are the ones described in the OP#1 who the Lord will destroy
as an act of RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT.
Should you pray for Putin? Absolutely! I am not sure of any other
way to show love. But He is not your enemy the way the Lord
describes them. He is not persecuting you as a Christian.
Many do engage in religious persecution, so there is that crossover.
He is the type of cruel tyrant that will be destroyed, lest he repent.
That is the OP.

Funny how we place everything in a box through our own perception. Yet we ignore the very fact of it. There is nothing I would not do for my daughter to save her or do for her as long as I am not enabling her issues. But presently because of her actions I can’t stand the thought of her let alone her presence. That is love and that is hate.

With all forthrightness, are you meaning to say we need to hate those who God hates? Because I think it's clear that God prepared the lake of fire for a reason. It seems like there's a deeper purpose for your inquiry than declaring God hates Putin if he doesn't repent.

With all forthrightness, are you saying we need to hate those who God hates?
I wouldn't dare. I am not God. We belong to Christ.
Vengeance belongs to God. He will avenge the poor,
the oppressed, the afflicted, the mistreated orphan
and widow, and those who have persecuted Israel,
including you, if that is so. It is called Justice, and
it is spoken of over and over in the scriptures.
I will leave a simple statement, if someone wants
to parse it away like they are doing to this entire OP
by going way off topic, that is on them.

James 2:13 For Judgment is without mercy
to the one who has shown no mercy.

Mercy triumphs over judgment.
Matthew 5:
7
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Was that forthright enough for you? :)
