That’s why we shouldn’t do that and not sure why you would consider Bible thumping is encouraging people to study the Word of God for themselves. To be honest its a rather odd comment if one is truly wanting people to seek God’s Truth, which is what scripture calls us to John 4:23-24
Only God is righteous and all righteousness comes from Him. Which is why we should have faith in the things He asks of us and that they are for our own good and not depend on what we think is right (the true definition of self-righteous). Having a relationship with God though His Word should never be discouraged. We are all accountable for what we teach others. Matthew 5:19
I will clarify for you, I am discouraging self righteousness while using and pointing to certain scriptures. Believe me when I tell you, this is not the right approach. I did this with an atheist women in 2001, I was sharing scripture and I heard God tell me to stop. I asked what, why I am trying to lead her to Christ? Do you know what God told me? He told me I was pushing her further into her disparity, He also showed me that her father a pastor In the church molested her as a child. My point is this… be cautious. Do you want to push someone further away from God? Love and a listening heart can be very healing for those who have been damaged. I hope I explained better as to why I feel the way I do. There are many other instances I could share. All very similar. I have been in the ministry when God called me to minister to the broken and rejected. I was first called at six years old. God tested me, and at 22 I was ready. I attended Tyndale seminary on a full scholarship. My life has been devoted to sharing the gospel and the healing powers of God’s love. Every ministry is unique. God has sent me to reach those who are hurting, rejected and feel unworthy of His love..
