Good morning, children. Today we will make stone soup for dinner so go hunt for rocks. Then we will cut out cardboard insoles for all your shoes. Then we will ride our bikes to the library because we don't have internet access.
Somehow we managed on one income, even when it wasn’t much at all.

Keith 99:
An additional very disturbing part is the already minimal 60 semester hours requirement can be satisfied at a non-accredited college.
Non-accredited= for profit. Like Palm Greased Tech.

Did you homeschool your children?

Yeah, it can work. A couple i know with 4 daughters (3 married) and 7 sons are doing great. When the kids were old enough they started investing in real estate, renovating houses for renting or flipping.
Since schoolwork takes less time in homeschooling they are working renovating houses.
All but three are teens and older.
I heard that this is why there were large families before the industrial revolution, because kids had to help support the family.
Should I call them the house flipping homeschoolers?

Why did you mock it, then?

I do think homeschooling is unrealistic for most families.
I also fear those who want to shield children from reality or to promote extreme ideas.
The family i described is unusual.
It’s very realistic for most families. You just need to have it as a priority over things like Internet and smart phones.

Yes, certainly saving a few hundred dollars a month will more than make up for losing a single parent's entire income after they quit their job to homeschool their children...

A single word asserted in place of an actual explanation of how a single-parent family would be able to home school their children.
There’s no blanket course of action. But if it’s a priority, they can make it happen. It’s good, though, that you at least are supportive of the idea.

I simply do not see how the typical 2 parent family could do it for high school or even before that. I made a very nice part time income tutoring kids in math during my college years, NOT because their parents did not have the time, but because their parents simply could not do it. And teaching math is easy compared to teaching chemistry.

Yes, keeping the fuming sulfuric acid away from the baby during “class” might prove difficult.

Since concentrated sulfuric acid is a key ingredent to making gun cotton just getting it without a known good reason might put you on a watch list.

You think science will be included in homeschool curriculum? LOL

According to my son who got his BS in History with Secondary Education, a teaching degree is amazingly easy to earn.
He decided not to teach and settled with pharma

That's true if mom needs daycare help but if her kids are school age she doesn't have that expense except for maybe a couple of hours after school.
Of course, that depends on the hours she has to work and the age of her children.
But even for the married mom when both parents are low-wage earners if the mom quits dad can't make the bills on his own. If mom makes just $400 a week and $300 goes to daycare they are still $400 a month ahead and that can make the difference between utilities being paid or not.

The cost of going to work is more than the cost of daycare. Those additional costs, such as transportation, are what eat into what initially appears to be a $400 addition.

If she can get a remote gig, such as doing part-time call-center work from home...that's a different situation.

The modal annual individual income in the US is only $33,000.
That doesn’t help. If he wants a specific answer, it has to be about a specific family.
