First of all, I hope this is the right forum. Since finding my faith in early 2015, I've found it's very difficult to remain a good Christian. How do you prevent yourself from slipping out of the lane and going back to your old ways? I'm becoming very disappointed in myself because I know I can do better, I know what I want, yet I still find myself slipping.

If Jesus kept leaving the other 99 to save me, as often as he does, even he would get annoyed after a while!:D

Jesus has more forgiveness than we have sin, if one is sincere when they repent. True repentance means having a changed heart and not wanting to sin and turning from sin to obedience to God’s law 1 John 3:4. But if we fall follow scripture: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:19

How is your devotion life? How often do you pray or read the Bible? Bring your concerns to God in prayer. Ask Him to replace your will for His will and than allow the Spirit to guide you. The Spirit will never guide you away from the teachings of scripture so its important to know and understand your bible.

How much outside influence are you allowing in your life? TV, music, faithless friends etc. Who and what we surround ourselves with is who we slowly start becoming. Replace worldly things with things of God and you will be surprised how fast your life can change for the better.

God bless!

I pray but probably not enough and I don't really read the Bible. I have a couple faithless friends but they are not swaying me, it's in my own head. I also follow politics and world events probably too much

Fear not dear friend. Without Jesus we can do nothing at all *John 15:1-5. What gives us victory to overcome this world of sin is faith *1 John 5:4 and without this faith it is impossible to please God because he that comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him *Hebrews 11:6. In fact whatsoever is not of faith is sin *Romans 14:23. So in order to follow God and walk in His Spirit *Galatians 5:16 we need faith which we receive God's grace and salvation *Ephesians 2:8-9 as a gift of God. So the answer to your question is how do we get this faith to overcome the world and the answer is found in Romans 10:17 faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. We need to prayerfully seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness *Matthew 6:33 see also Jeremiah 29:13 through Gods' Word and believe and follow what God's Word says. This is what it means when Jesus says we need to be born again. We are born again and walk in newness of life by having faith in what Gods' Word says *see 1 John 3:9 compare to Luke 8:11; John 17:17. Separate anything from your life that might lead you into temptation and seek to follow God through His Word. That is where our power lies.

May God bless you as you seek Him through His Word.

I would definitely start by reading your Bible as this is God’s Word to us. It’s the only way we know His will for us and it teaches us what we need to do to be saved. My recommendation is to start with Genesis and Exodus and than go to the New Testament and then go back to finish the Old Testament. Always pray before reading scripture and ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Here’s a sermon on prayer that might be helpful.

God bless!

In any relationship you need to communicate …dialog…that is the only way to know someone …to know if you like them or love them…or can’t stand them.

You stated you didn’t read the Word much and therein is the lane slippage. I don’t know anyone who can maintain a relationship without communicating.

God has given His Word to us… to you so you can know him…the words in the Word are spirit and they are life (Jhn 6:63) it is the only thing that can… and will transform your life as a Christian. (Rom 12:2)

The first three chapters of Ephesians is all about what God has done and will do for you. If you want to change you need to know your Father and since he has magnified His Word above all his name (Psa 138:2) it might be a good idea to get to know him.
