Did the Catholic Church actually write what you claimed at Trent? Did you actually look for yourself? I don't mind going over a quotation once in a while, but I'm not falling for the tactic of ten more for each one refuted, volume rather than quality. See what was said at Trent for yourself, find the actual text and I will be glad to discuss it. As I've said, the Catholic Church has denounced Bibles where material is added or subtracted, that means legitimate translations as well, but the idea is to bring the Word of God to the people. The translation after translation that I stated are all true. Why translate the Word of God into the common language if you were trying to hide if from the people? It doesn't even make any sense, have the courage to check out the statements Trent for yourself.
Go do your own research. Yes the outcomes are from the Catholic Councils and Catholic Popes (see decrees from the Roman Catholic Church)

I have spent thousands of hours researching documents, I recall nothing like you described for Trent. I'll give you a tip, if there is something earth shattering in a document people won't hesitate to print an entire section. Of course quotations can be falsified, but I would be highly suspect if someone either describes rather than quotes or gives a quotation using just a few words, in that way things can easily be taken out of context. If they don't give a page number or way to find the document it also is highly suspicious. For example, there is probably an online link to all of the text from the Council of Trent, whether at the Vatican or some Protestant source. If Catholic doctrine is not the truth or Catholics are trying to keep the Word of God from the people I would be out there trying to make it as easy as I could for others to verify the facts.

You do not need to give me any tips. I do not own prayerful research claiming God to be my guide and teacher and put His Word first as shown in *John 7:17; John 16:13; John 14:26; 1 John 2:27. You have been provided both scripture and direct references from the Roman Catholic Church. I did not write them.

Take Care.

God gave you a mind so that you could use it, it is a huge mistake to believe something on the Internet just because it fits your narrative. Actually I have not been given a direct link, and you don't even get the name of my Church correctly, not exactly a pillar of accuracy. Let's see the link to the Council of Trent documents, right to the actual document and quotation, not to an anti-Catholic website. Too many people with hatred in their hearts are willing to create websites without checking out the validity of the information.

God gave me a mind and I use it. So should you and everyone else. God is my guide and teacher. You have have been provided both scripture and historical references as well as direct quotes from the Roman Catholic Church that are in disagreement with you. All you have provided in response is your denial through your opinion unsupported by scripture or evidence. So we will agree to disagree. Telling the truth is simply that. It is not anti-catholic it is the truth but it seems you do not believe it. (Council of Trent quote sourced original)

Again, it is not a direct quotation--I ask that you provide me a link to the supposed quotation from Trent. I have provided you with passages from Holy Scripture and indeed the numerous translations of the Bible I mentioned are an historical fact. Since Jesus renamed Simon as Rock and gave Rock (Peter) the keys to the kingdom it is the responsibility of the Catholic Church to validly pass on the Word of God. Since so many people made changes to the Bible, adding or subtracting, or adding their own commentary, it became the policy of the Church to certify versions of the Bible. The Church has promotes the Word of God to Catholics and everyone else, as I said, we have had readings from Holy Scripture at masses for almost 2000 years. Catholics risked torture and death and fled to France to publish the Douay-Rheims Bible and get it back to England so that the people could read a legitimate Bible with all 73 books and no commentary attacking God's Word. No, Catholics do not hate the Bible, Bibles were not chained in Catholic Church to keep the Bible from the people, they were chained so that the Bible would not be stolen. If you are old enough you may remember telephone books at telephone booths--the chaining was not to keep phone numbers from the people. We have to avoid the temptations of Satan to attack other Christians and instead work together to do God's will.

As to Trent, your original posted link said the council "placed the Bible on its list of prohibited books" and then gave a quote containing the word "absolution." The "direct quote" link you provided said nothing about the Bible being on the list of prohibited books. To make sure I wasn't missing anything I did a search on "absolution" and "prohibited" and nothing turned up for either, unless I am missing something it looks like the quote you allege is real is not in the Trent documents as you claim. I assure you Bibles were not chained in churches to keep people from reading the Bible. Think about it, why even keep a Bible in a church, why not bury it if you truly wished to hide it from people?

Nope your taking things out of context to what was posted earlier..

(6) Pope Leo X (1513-1521), who railed against Luther’s efforts to follow the biblical precept of faith alone and Scripture alone, called the fifth Lateran Council (1513-1517), which charged that no books should be printed except those approved by the Roman Catholic Church. “THEREFORE FOREVER THEREAFTER NO ONE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PRINT ANY BOOK OR WRITING WITHOUT A PREVIOUS EXAMINATION, TO BE TESTIFIED BY MANUAL SUBSCRIPTION, BY THE PAPAL VICAR AND MASTER OF THE SACRED PALACE IN ROME, and in other cities and dioceses by the Inquisition, and the bishop or an expert appointed by him. FOR NEGLECT OF THIS THE PUNISHMENT WAS EXCOMMUNICATION, THE LOSS OF THE EDITION, WHICH WAS TO BE BURNED, a fine of 100 ducats to the fabric of St. Peters, and suspension from business for a year” (Henry Lea, The Inquisition of the Middle Ages).

(7) These restrictions were repeated by the Council of Trent in 1546, which placed translations of the Bible, such as the German, Spanish, and English, on its list of prohibited books and forbade any person to read the Bible without a license from a Catholic bishop or inquisitor.

Following is a quote from Trent:

…IT SHALL NOT BE LAWFUL FOR ANYONE TO PRINT OR TO HAVE PRINTED ANY BOOKS WHATSOEVER DEALING WITH SACRED DOCTRINAL MATTERS WITHOUT THE NAME OF THE AUTHOR, OR IN THE FUTURE TO SELL THEM, OR EVEN TO HAVE THEM IN POSSESSION, UNLESS THEY HAVE FIRST BEEN EXAMINED AND APPROVED BY THE ORDINARY, UNDER PENALTY OF ANATHEMA AND FINE prescribed by the last Council of the Lateran” (Fourth session, April 8, 1546, The Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent, Translated by H.J. Schroeder, pp. 17-19; - Original Trent source).

....................

Original from Trent below

CONCERNING THE EDITION AND USE OF THE SACRED BOOKS

SECOND DECREE

Celebrated on the eighth day of the month of April, in the year 1546.

Moreover, the same sacred and holy Synod,--considering that no small utility may accrue to the Church of God, if it be made known which out of all the Latin editions, now in circulation, of the sacred books, is to be held as authentic,--ordains and declares, that the said old and vulgate edition, which, by the lengthened usage of so many years, has been approved of in the Church, be, in public lectures, disputations, sermons and expositions, held as authentic; and that no one is to dare, or presume to reject it under any pretext whatever.

Furthermore, in order to restrain petulant spirits, It decrees, that no one, relying on his own skill, shall,--in matters of faith, and of morals pertaining to the edification of Christian doctrine, --wresting the sacred Scripture to his own senses, presume to interpret the said sacred Scripture contrary to that sense which holy mother Church,--whose it is to judge of the true sense and interpretation of the holy Scriptures,--hath held and doth hold; or even contrary to the unanimous consent of the Fathers; even though such interpretations were never (intended) to be at any time published. Contraveners shall be made known by their Ordinaries, and be punished with the penalties by law established.

And wishing, as is just, to impose a restraint, in this matter, also on printers, who now without restraint,--thinking, that is, that whatsoever they please is allowed them,--print, without the license of ecclesiastical superiors, the said books of sacred Scripture, and the notes and comments upon them of all persons indifferently, with the press ofttimes unnamed, often even fictitious, and what is more grievous still, without the author's name; and also keep for indiscriminate sale books of this kind printed elsewhere; (this Synod) ordains and decrees, that, henceforth, the sacred Scripture, and especially the said old and vulgate edition, be printed in the most correct manner possible; and that IT SHALL NOT BE LAWFUL FOR ANY ONE TO PRINT, OR CAUSE TO BE PRINTED, ANY BOOKS WHATEVER, ON SACRED MATTERS, WITHOUT THE NAME OF THE AUTHOR; NOR TO SELL THEM IN FUTURE, OR EVEN TO KEEP THEM, UNLESS THEY SHALL HAVE BEEN FIRST EXAMINED, AND APPROVED OF, BY THE ORDINARY; UNDER PAIN OF THE ANATHEMA AND FINE imposed in a canon of the last Council of Lateran: and, if they be Regulars, besides this examination and approval, they shall be bound to obtain a license also from their own superiors, who shall have examined the books according to the form of their own statutes. As to those who lend, or circulate them in manuscript, without their having been first examined, and approved of, they shall be subjected to the same penalties as printers: and they who shall have them in their possession or shall read them, shall, unless they discover the authors, be themselves regarded as the authors. And the said approbation of books of this kind shall be given in writing; and for this end it shall appear authentically at the beginning of the book, whether the book be written, or printed; and all this, that is, both the approbation and the examination, shall be done gratis, that so what ought to be approved, may be approved, and what ought to be condemned, may be condemned. Besides the above, wishing to repress that temerity, by which the words and sentences of sacred Scripture are turned and twisted to all sorts of profane uses, to wit, to things scurrilous, fabulous, vain, to flatteries, detractions, superstitions, impious and diabolical incantations, sorceries, and defamatory libels; (the Synod) commands and enjoins, for the doing away with this kind of irreverence and contempt, and that no one may hence forth dare in any way to apply the words of sacred Scripture to these and such like purposes; that all men of this description, profaners and violators of the word of God, be by the bishops restrained by the penalties of law, and others of their own appointment.

.............

Sorry I am not playing these games anymore of deny, rinse and repeat when I spend my time giving you genuine scripture and historical references shared in love and only as a help to you. We will have to agree to disagree but thank you for the discussion. Perhaps you can pray about it.

Take Care

Quit falsely accusing me. I asked you to show me where in Trent the quotation was from and where in Trent the Bible was supposedly put on the prohibited list. You are falling back on your old tactic of throwing out large amounts of information and throwing out accusations. If you can't find the quotation or where it says the Bible was prohibited in Trent then just say so. It's not a matter of disagreeing or agreeing, it's whether you can document the two items in Trent. You give a far worse impression being evasive then just saying you can't find that particular quotation or supposed Bible prohibition in Trent.

I keep Jesus Christ the center of my life. I obey His commandments and trust the commandments He gave us are for our own good and I don't need to alter or change His commandments to suit my lifestyle, I adjust my lifestyle to obey God. Exodus 20 If I stumble and fall, which I do, I go directly to Him for the forgiveness of my sins, just like He tells us to do in scripture. 1 John 1:9 I trust in Him that He will teach me all things in scripture, just like He promised John 14:26 and He promises to give His Spirit for those who obey. Acts 5:32 You don't need to worry about me and we should trust the scriptures and commandments of God over mans traditions that Jesus warned us about. Matthew 15:3-9

We should worry about those who don't believe in the promises of Jesus or obey God's Word. God bless

Those are nice thoughts, but I don't believe you understand what you are saying. You claim to follow Jesus, then you claim to follow the Bible only. Jesus is more than the Bible. The Bible is a testimony of the truth, Jesus is truth itself, even the Bible says that it is not complete. You maintain the party line by promoting SDA teaching and making it equivalent to scripture, yet even SDA teaching is an interpretation of scripture and not the scriptures themselves. That brings me to the whole point of this thread. You cannot live by sola scriptura, all views of scripture are an interpretation, yours is SDA; it is not sola scriptura. If you can't see that, then yes you need prayer.

2Thessalonians 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle.

The Apostles had traditions that we are supposed to hold, even from outside the Bible, as it says whether by word or our epistle. Paul did not teach sola scriptura

The Apostles had traditions that we are supposed to hold, even from outside the Bible, as it says whether by word or our epistle. Paul did not teach sola scriptura

Let's look at the context of the above quoted verse by including verse 14.

2 Thessalonians 2:14-15

14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
The verse therefore pertains to the gospel of Jesus Christ specifically—traditions anchored the teachings of Jesus, which were relayed by word (mouth) and epistle. The quoted verse is not speaking of the tradition of men, of which departs from the specified standard.

Jesus warned against the tradition of men during His ministry, as do the very epistles that verse 15 refers to. This was previously shown to be the case in post #125.

Jesus taught from the law and the prophets. The verse refers to epistle, which is essentially all of the New Testament writings. i.e. Scripture.

Ok, I agree with your statement. We are not to follow the traditions of men. That is a given.
What is also a given is that the scriptures are incomplete, as stated in the scriptures themselves. We have the traditions of the Apostles, and to those we hold fast.

Some accuse the Catholic Church of following the traditions of men, but such is not the case. The faith was established by Our Lord, preached by the Apostles and confirmed for almost two millenia. It is not the traditions of men

Hi BWAP. Nice to see you again. The scriptures are complete and faith that comes by Gods' Word alone is our only means of salvation (see Ephesians 2:8; John 3:36). This is the good news of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. That is our salvation simply comes by faith in God's Word. That is by believing and following what Gods' Word says alone...
  • 2 Timothy 3:15 [15], And that from a child thou hast KNOWN THE HOLY SCRIPTURES, which are able to make thee WISE UNTO SALVATION THROUGH FAITH which is in Christ Jesus.
  • John 7:17 SANCTIFY THEM (make them holy; set them apart) through the truth YOUR WORD IS TRUTH.
  • 1 John 5:4 [4], For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, EVEN OUR FAITH.
  • Ephesians 2:8 We are SAVED by grace THROUGH FAITH
  • Romans 10:17 [17], So then FAITH COMES by hearing, and hearing BY THE WORD OF GOD.
  • Romans 14:23 .... whatsoever is not of faith (in God's Word) is sin.
  • Hebrews 11:6 [6], But without faith (that comes from God's Word) it is impossible to please him: for he that comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
.................

There is no salvation outside of faith in God's Word that either comes by hearing it or reading it in the scriptures. This is why we can only live by faith in the scriptures alone. Our salvation does not come by anything we can do because we have all sinned and are sinners. Our salvation is a gift of God because of what Jesus has done for us and we receive it as a gift from God simply by believing God's promises and obeying what God's Word says (faith in God's Word).

I understand exactly what I am saying. The scripture is the authority (God's Word) and I honestly can't understand why a Christian would want to claim otherwise. If someone teaches something that goes against scripture, we are told it is not coming from God. Isaiah 8:20. The scriptures are our safeguard so we know we are following the right Spirit.

I keep posting scripture and you keep posting your opinion. In my opinion we should never post our opinions as equal to what scripture says. Scripture is the authority so when we are told by Jesus who said “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. and For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 1 Timothy 2:5. We should trust the promises of the scriptures.

God is not a book, God is much more and cannot be confined to a book. The idea of ceding over power to a book gained popularity roughly a thousand years after the Catholic Church chose the 73 books of the Bible.

Jesus is the living Word of God who gave us his recorded spoken and written Words of God (scripture) and our complete salvation is wholly dependent on believing and living by it according to the scriptures. *John 1:1-4; 14; Matthew 4:4; John 17:17; John 3:26; 2 Timothy 3:15-16; Ephesians 2:8; Romans 10:17; Romans 14:23; Hebrews 11:6. We are not saved by the teachings and traditions of men that lead us away from Gods' Word to break the commandments of God. In fact Jesus warns us about this in Matthew 15:3-9.

There are so many splinter religions that have broken off from Christ's Church and follow man-made traditions, it is our prayer that those religions one day re-unite with us.

Christs Church according to the scriptures, are all those who believe and follow what God's Word says not those who say "We have Abraham for our father and are Abraham's seed and never in bondage to any man" *see John 8:31-47; John 8:31-36; John 7:17. Those who depart Gods' Word depart the faith as faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God *Romans 10:17. In the last days according to Jesus there will be many false prophets and false Christs to deceive if possible God's very elect *Matthew 22:14. We are in the last days. Jesus is coming and calling us all where ever we might be to come out of following man-made teaching and traditions that lead us away from God and His Word to break the commandments of God, back to His Word to worship Him in Spirit and in truth. God is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth *see Matthew 15:3-9; John 4:23-24. According to John of Revelation, "Babylon has fallen and God is calling us back to His Word. Gods' sheep will hear His voice (the Word) and follow Him. Those who do not hear according to Jesus do not hear and follow because they are not His sheep *John 10:26-27. It is now time for us all to wake up. It is now time to trim our lamps and go out to meet the bridegroom. If our lamp goes out how will we find our way when the road is dark and narrow and there are few that be that find it *Psalms 119:105; Proverbs 6:23; Matthew 7:13-14; Matthew 7:20-23?
