I usually post in the Advice section of Christian forums. Some people have pointed out that I need to forgive, after reading my posts. One brother in particular (I can't remember who), has often pointed me to one web page in particular that talks about the importance of forgiveness. Since I was so lost in the depths of my bitterness, it didn't really hit home for me. I didn't understand the message that he or the webpage were trying to convey. I thought I had forgiven. I prayed and said to God that I forgave. Yet, I was struggling with bitterness, anger, and resentment for a long time. I knew that those were not fruits of the Holy Spirit and I prayed about them, but I was still missing it.

In the meantime, I was dealing with a lot of spiritual bondage and affliction from the enemy. I sought prayer and help from many places, but even though there was some spiritual relief, the problem didn't completely go away. Only recently, did I hear one brother doing some very Christ centered teaching that talks about how the enemy will have power from God to afflict and torment us if we fail to forgive others of their sins. He preached according to Matthew 18 and according to Matthew 5:44. He talked about the steps that Jesus told us to take when forgiving. That not only are we to forgive the person, but that we are to bless them as well.

I heard this preaching and I meditated on it. I thought to myself, why is it important for me to forgive, does it really matter to God what the state of my heart is? I understood in my head but I needed to understand it in my heart. I thought about Jesus forgiving us on the cross, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do!" I thought about how much He was suffering and in pain. I thought about how the state of our heart is important to God. I thought to myself, if this is so important to God, then let me put this principle into action. I began to pray, forgiving and blessing. To my surprise, I began to experience relief from my spiritual bondage and affliction. Not only that, but underneath the bitterness, I realized that I was hurting emotionally. Now I am taking steps to ameliorate the situations that caused me bitterness. Steps to put my forgiveness into action. I am grateful for what God has shown me and for how He has been working in my life. I wanted to share my own experience with applying the principles of Christ in my walk of faith.

Beloved one, there is joy in forgiveness.

Beloved one, long to honor God with a life reflecting the joy of forgiveness as a sinner saved by grace.

As we walk on the earth, our feet may get dirty, just our Lord cleansed our feet so we should clean our brothers and sisters’ feet, that we release forgiveness to them daily, that God may forgive our trespasses or disobedience, that we may be comforted by the Lord’s mercies, and be found His mercies, that is His steadfast love, that He has compassion on us and removed our transgressions as far as the East from the west, that He restores our inner person, that we may have the strength not only to forgive others but also to love one another through the love of Christ, that we obey His commandments, that we keep His covenant of love and peace.

Beloved one, when we release forgiveness, we are no longer under bondage. If we are no longer under bondage, we stand fast in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.

when we delight ourselves in the joy of forgiveness, we are no longer burdened, for we have to come to Jesus, that we abide in the Spirit of His words, that set us free.

When we are no longer oppressed by past experiences, we perceive the freedom of God that let the oppressed go free from the enemy, that the oppressed no longer mourning, no longer consider that God forget but God remembers, that the oppressed may go joyfully because of the freedom of God.

Beloved ones, let us call God our rock.

May God’s peace be with you in every way.

To God the Father be all glory and thanksgiving through Christ. Amen

Beloved one, past events or experiences or memories did UPSET us when people talk about them or when we remembered them or when we are around those who hurt us.

The counsel of the Lord we heard:
“Fret not thyself because of evildoers,
Neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭37:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Not to fret is not to be unhappy, not to be disappointed, and not worried !

If we were upset or fret because they who did wrong to us, but if we are not upset because Jesus did right to us.

So we should trust in the Lord, that Jesus did right to us, that we are happy, satisfied and calm or assured of His words, that we should speak faith over circumstances and people around us, that we trust God delivered us out of all our fears and agony, that He saves us out of all of our troubles.

And sister Basilea Schlink enlightened me :

Disappointments come from already wanting to see what we are first meant to lay hold of in faith.

Beloved ones, let us hold of in faith, the safety that we yearn, that we speak faith over our grievous and sorrowful circumstances, that we also speak faith that expresses in the love of Christ over others who hurt us, for in Christ’s love we shall be triumphant, for we take refuge in His wounds, for His blood heals us and make us whole.

To God the Father be all glory and thanksgiving. Amen

Forgiveness is about relationship and cannot be completed unilaterally. If someone who did the wrong does not ask for forgiveness or even admit that they did something wrong, there is not much that can be done other than avoid them to prevent future injury.

Forgiveness doesn’t require reciprocity or admission. It’s about seeing the situation from God’s perspective and letting go. We may never hear an apology or reconcile. But we needn’t be mired in anger and bitterness over hurts. Release is liberating.

thought about Jesus forgiving us on the cross, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do!"

Please re read what Jesus said.
He prayer " Father forgive them... "
He did not forgive them, but handed them over to God, asking/pleadi g that he, God the Father would forgive them.

If your theology is based on a misunderstanding of scripture you will not be following g God.

How does God forgive? Is it not conditional upon repentance.

Repentance before forgiveness is the pattern found throughout the bible.
Once an offer der has repented then we Must forgive.
Until then copy Jesus and hand the situation over to God and do the hard loveing thing of praying for them.

"Letting go", forgetting, and letting a root of bitterness die out are all good things, but they are not the same things as forgiveness. We find this in the example of a restored relationship with God;

1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Here the word "confess" is homologos (to say the same words). The idea is that when we are able to say the same thing about what we have done that God would, that we bring ourselves into alignment with truth and are thus able to have a restored relationship.

Eph. 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

This verse helps me the most. The part that I like is that Christ already forgave my sin before I was born just because I believe he died to pay for my debt. There is more power in forgiving someone than not. I'm not saying that we forget that person such that we make the same mistake again, I'm saying that forgiveness opens the door to continuing your walk with the Lord who can help your relationship with the person you have forgiven.
