I appreciate the correction, tampasteve, but this proves the point that contentious issues cannot be resolved by scripture alone. There is always an influence outside of scripture, and the thought process depends on the group you belong to , or who you trust, not the Bible alone. The Bible is so complex that we depend on sources outside the Bible to rightly divide the word of truth.
It was the point of the OP that no one can live by sola scriptura, and those that claim to do so are either self deceived or intellectually dishonest. I know I am biased and use sources outside scripture to interpret it, and I admit it. The Bible is too complex, even with the written word, we see through a glass darkly; when the Scriptures are opened for us we will be amazed. Watch the Jordan Peterson video in the OP, it is profound
I was protestant, and claimed to use sola scriptura. I know all of you want to serve God to the best of your ability. Keep asking, seeking, knocking. Never think that you have a complete firm grasp of Scripture, because when you do, your hearts are hard. God does not want hearts of stone, but hearts of flesh. Humility is the virtue, pride is the vice, as it says in Psalm 51 [19] A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Peace be with you

We are all biased and some of it is because that's what we were taught when we were growing up or we always went to this Church or that one and just took for granted that our way was the right way. No…Sola Scriptura is Not Found in the Bible: But That Was Never the Point

I appreciate the sentiment, but the article makes mistakes that do not hold up in a court of law. A lawyer would say that it assumes facts not in evidence. It says that Councils have contradicted themselves without showing how they contradict each other, they just assume everyone knows that. That is not a fair assessment of facts. If one makes a charge, they need evidence.
Luther didn't even live by sola scriptura and added the word alone to Romans 3:28. He stated that context demands it, but it does not harmonize with the rest of the Bible. The context is for faith without the ceremonial works of the law. This does not mean faith alone, rather faith without old ceremony, which was a shadow of things to come. Adding the word "alone" ignores the rest of the Bible when Paul says in 1 Cor 13 that if he had faith alone, it would make him nothing
[2] And if I should have prophecy and should know all mysteries, and all knowledge, and if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
Faith with Charity is not faith alone. James' epistle states that we are saved by works and not faith alone, James 2:24 [24] Do you see that by works a man is justified; and not by faith only?
Luther was not going by scripture only, but Luther only, and no one could tell him different. The adding of the word alone to Romans 3:28 destroys the harmony and changes the meaning of scripture
The Westminster confession was an interesting choice. Is that Church of England or the confession of John Calvin?

This is another reason that Sola Scriptura is unworkable, and it cannot even be the highest authority if there is no agreement in proper translation. We could have endless debates and go round and round to get no where. If there is not sola scriptura due to multiple competing translations, then what does sola scriptura really mean, if I could change it to fit my thoughts and claim I only added emphasis for context? That is then not sola scriptura, rather my thoughts on scripture.

peace be with you

For me personally I do not agree with your claims here but please allow me to explain why.

According to the scripture there is only unity through faith *Ephesians 4:13 and this faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Words of God *Romans 10:17. I agree with you however that there is no unity of faith because "the many" that are called seek to know God's Word through the teachings and traditions of men outside of Gods' Word which lead them away from Gods' Word and therefore "the faith" that is received from Gods' Word to break the commandments of God.

According to the scriptures, Gods' people are all those living up to all the light that he has revealed to them and are found in every Church *John 10:16 but the hour is coming and now is that the true worshipers (the few *Matthew 22:14) will worship the father in Spirit and in truth *see John 4:23; John 17:17. God is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth *John 4:24. God is calling us all wherever we might by to come out from following man-made teachings and traditions that lead us away from God and His Word to break the commandments of God back to His Word to worship Him in Spirit and in truth by believing and following what His Word says. No one can know Gods' Word if God is not their guide and teacher but this is God's promise to all those who turn away from the teachings and traditions of men and seek Him through His Word and faithfully continue believing and following what Gods' Word says.

Carefully follow these scriptures through.

In order to find God we need to prayerfully seek him through His Word and continue by faith believing and following what Gods' Word says...

  • Jeremiah 29:13 [13], And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
  • John 8:31-36 [31], Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; [32], And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. [33], They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how say you, You shall be made free? [34], Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Whoever commits sin is the servant of sin. [35], And the servant stays not in the house for ever: but the Son stays ever. [36], If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.
God saves us as we believe and follow what His Word says...
  • John 17:17 [17], Sanctify them through your truth: your word is truth.
  • John 6:63 [63], It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life.
  • Ephesians 2:8 [8], For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God
  • Romans 10:17 [17], So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
God promises to be our guide and teacher if we prayerfully seek Him through His Words and continue in faith believing and following what His Word says...
  • John 7:17 [17], If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
  • John 16:13 [13], However, when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.
  • John 14:26 [26], But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatever I have said to you.
  • 1 John 2:27 [27], But the anointing which you have received of him stays in you, and you need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it has taught you, you shall abide in him.
..............

There is no salvation outside of faith in God's Word *John 3:36; Romans 14:23; Hebrews 11:6. This is why scripture is the only rule of faith and also why we can only find life as we live by scripture alone. God is calling us all to come out from following man-made teachings and traditions that lead us away from God and His Word to break the commandments of God and to worship Him in Spirit and in truth by believing and following what His Word says. All of us will be in two groups at the second coming. We will either be in the many that were called but did not believe and follow Gods' Word or the few that were chosen because they believed and followed what Gods' Word says. According to Jesus God's sheep hear His voice (the Word) and follow him. Those who do not hear and follow are not God's sheep according to John 10:26-27. My prayer is that everyone here can be with the few that are chosen because they have faith in God's Word and hear His voice *1 John 5:4

Take Care.

Man-made traditions are different than the Sacred Tradition passed down from Jesus through the Apostles and popes. For example, the Bible does not say that the Archangel Michael is Jesus, that is a man-made tradition in a religion.
Hello Valletta nice to meet you. I know your post was for someone else so I Hope you do not mind me making a comment here. If our so called "sacred traditions" are not found in the scriptures or are against what the scriptures teach they are not sacred but are indeed man-made teachings and traditions only found outside of the scriptures. There is nothing wrong with man-made teachings and traditions in and of themselves. Jesus says that they are only wrong when they lead us away from Gods' Word to break the commandments of God in Matthew 15:2-9. Therefore the scriptures are the only rule of faith, that is what is true and what is not true *Romans 3:4

Where did the Apostles get message, the N.T. had not been written yet when they were converting people to Christianity
In the days of Jesus and the Apostles their bible was the Old testament scriptures. These scriptures foretold of Jesus as the promised Messiah and Gods' Word of creation and the living Word of God *John 1:1-4; 14. Jesus who is the living Word of God gave His Word to His Apostles to give to the world. That is how we have the new testament scriptures today. Together both the old testament and the new testament scriptures make up the Word of God that we are to believe and follow and live by which is the reason why we can only live by the spoken words of God or the scriptures alone because there is where our faith comes from *Romans 10:17 that we are saved by *Ephesians 2:8

The Word of God is not just in Holy Scripture, the Catholic Church was thriving with the Word of God before one word of the NT was written and for centuries before the Catholic Church chose the 73 books of the Bible. The Bible is the book of the Catholic Church, not the other way around. I am pleased that you know that you cannot change any of God's Commandments.
Jesus is the living Word of God and the God of creation who created all things through the power of His Word according to John 1:1-4; 14. The old testament scriptures are God's Word *2 Timothy 3:15-16 that pointed to Jesus as the promised Messiah and savior of the world and the living Word of God. It is Jesus (God) that gave his Apostles His Words to give to the world through the spoken Words of God (Jesus) and recorded for us today as scripture that makes up the new testament through the four gospels and the writings of the Apostles that Jesus gave His Words to give to us today. The early Church and God's Church according to the scriptures are all those who believe and follow what God's Word says whether the spoken Word of God or the written Word of God (scripture). This is why it is written for us today that "Faith comes by hearing (spoken Word of God) and hearing by the Word of God (Jesus the living Word and scripture). *Romans 10:17. Either way you look at it the spoken Word or the recorded written Words that we know about God today is God's Word that the Church (those who believe and follow what God's Word says) thrived under. Not the teachings or traditions of any man that leads us away from Gods' Word to break the commandments of God as Jesus talks about in Matthew 15:3-9.

Correct the word they got from Jesus which had not become scripture yet, they were preaching a Gospel that was not yet written it was not yet scripture. Perhaps that is why we have the scripture "faith comes by hearing the word"
Whether the spoken Word of God that becomes the recorded written Words of God it does not really matter. We are saved by Gods' grace through faith *Ephesians 2:8 and this faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God *Romans 10:17 which is why today the scriptures are the only rule of faith because it is through believing and following what Gods Word says that leads us to saving faith.

I would clarify that by saying humans in the Church, and not the Church herself.
It is the people that make up the Church (the body) the head however (the teachings of Jesus and His Word) is the head of the people that make up the Church according to the scriptures and God's people believe and follow them. In the last days however there will be many false Christs (heads or teachings of the Church body - people) *Matthew 24:24

i know you mean well, but you do not see what you are doing. It is called a circular argument

Circular arguments occur when a person's argument repeats what they already assumed before without arriving at a new conclusion. For example, if someone says, "According to my brain, my brain is reliable," that's a circular argument.

Circular arguments often use a claim as both a premise and a conclusion. This fallacy only appears to be an argument when in fact it's just restating one's assumptions.

That is what Jordan Peterson pointed out in the OP. Scripture is a good source of truth, but it cannot be the only source or even the highest source as it is dependent on man’s interpretation and worse on man’s translation.
Rightly divided and rightly translated it is the highest source, but how do you know you are doing it right, and how do you know you have the correct book?

I know you mean well too but your claims here are not true but allow me to explain why. For something to be "circular reasoning" and a fallacy (faulty reasoning) it needs to be based from the start on a faulty premise that is not supported by evidence. This is what makes "circular reasoning a logical fallacy (Wiki). My premises are based on evidence provided in the scriptures in the post you were responding to but refuse to discuss. For example, my premise is that Gods' Word is truth that we are saved by as we live, believe and follow what God's Word says. The scriptures were provided as evidence to prove that we are saved by God's grace through faith in God's Word as shown in Ephesians 2:8; John 3:36 and also in John 17:17 where it also says "Sanctify them through the truth, your words are truth" and again, "It is the Spirit the quickens, the flesh profits nothing. The Words that I speak unto you they are Spirit and they are life" - John 6:63 not to mention the many other scriptures already provided that teach that we only have Gods salvation as we continue in Gods' Word believing and following what God's Word says. So as shown above my premise and evidence is scripture which is not faulty reasoning but the only standard of what Gods' truth is. So I have not provided a logical fallacy as my premise is based on the evidence of what God's Word says. All you have done here is to avoid addressing the post you are responding to by making untruthful claims unsupported by evidence to what was posted to you. In essence you have provided an opinion that is in disagreement with the scripture evidence provided in the post you were quoting from. I think what you are missing here, and was shown earlier from the scriptures in the post you were quoting from, is that none of us can know the truth of Gods' Word if God is not our guide and teacher and we seek to know the truth of Gods' Word from the teachings and traditions of men outside of the scriptures. (see post # 284 linked)

very true however any preaching they did on the Gospel had to come from the non written words and actions of Jesus, the N.T. was not yet written.

Not exactly. Jesus gave the Apostles the great commission to give His teachings to the World. Today we have them as scripture. Jesus is the living Word of God *John 1:1-4; 14 who spoke and quoted the old testament scriptures (e.g. Matthew 4:4) as well has His own words explaining the true meaning of these scriptures. The written Word of God needs to be spoken before it can be recorded as scripture. That is why Romans 10:17 says "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God". Today we have the recorded written Words of God as scriptures from the old and new testament.

ok, you say that is your premise, but what is the word of God? What basis do you have for discarding John Chapter 6 and claiming it is symbolic, nothing more than a memorial meal, when Christianity accepted the Eucharist as the flesh and blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ before some like Wycliffe and Tyndale argued that it was symbolic. The wording of John 6 is very clear, but you discount it

[51] I am the living bread which came down from heaven. [52] If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, for the life of the world. [53] The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? [54] Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you. [55] He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.

your teaching is based on portions of the Bible to fit your view point. Where do you get your view point? Who told you that Christ’s words were not real and only symbolic?
I can try to follow your logic, but when you can’t admit the shortcomings of your position and reveal the source of those shortcomings, it will be futile.
The word of God is the whole word of God. What basis do you give for discarding the deuterocanon? Who limited your scripture and why? The Church accepts the 77 books of the canon, you don’t. How do I know that you have the truth? Our canon contains the verses you reference but we come to different conclusions. How do you explain this?
These circumstances show that sola scriptura is a fallacy. There has to be ecclesial authority to guide people to the truth. Christianity is a kingdom, not every man for himself

Already answered in the post you are quoting from. Scripture is God's Word which includes all the old testament scriptures *2 Timothy 3:15-16 and all the new testament scriptures, in the teachings of Jesus who is God's living Word *John 1:1-4; 14 in the gospels and the Apostles who he gave His Words to give to the world *Matthew 28:19-20. The Word of God therefore is the spoken Words of God and the recorded written words of God given to us by Jesus who is the living Word of God in both the old and new testament scriptures.
[55] He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.
Simply, I have never disregarded John 6. I discarded your interpretation of John 6 because it is not biblical or supported in scripture. We do not literally eat the flesh and drink the blood of Jesus. It is literally impossible. The true meaning of John 6 on Jesus being the bread of life is only supportive of everything that has been shared with you in this OP and that is Jesus is the living Word and it is only through believing and following what his Word says that we have everlasting life *John 6:63; John 3:36; Matthew 7:21; John 17:17. We eat His flesh (the living Word of God *John 1:1-4; 14) by believing and following what His Word says and by doing so have everlasting life. This was already shared with you earlier through a detailed scripture response in post # 27 linked. Your response was to simply ignore the scriptures shared with you in the linked post and you did not want to discuss these scriptures with me. See also the further response in post # 38 linked in regards to the false teaching of transubstantiation (more here linked) the belief that eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ is literal.
your teaching is based on portions of the Bible to fit your view point.
Sorry I do not believe you. Perhaps your projecting here. I believe in all of Gods' Word which is why I provide scripture based on subject matter provided in context (1 Peter 3:15)
Where do you get your view point? Who told you that Christ’s words were not real and only symbolic?
From scripture and the very words of Jesus as shown already in post # 27 linked. Also Jesus says elsewhere,

Matthew 13:10-16 [10], And the disciples came, and said to him, Why speak you to them in parables? [11], He answered and said to them, Because it is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. [12], For whoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whoever has not, from him shall be taken away even that he has. [13], Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. [14], And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which said, By hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive: [15], For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. [16], But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

We must seek to know God's Word through His spirit and His Word in order to understand their meaning. We do not literally eat the flesh of Jesus and drink His blood. He is the Word of God and the parable is that God's Word is to be our life *Matthew 4:4; see John 6:63. See also the further response in post # 38 linked in regards to the false teaching of transubstantiation (more here linked) the belief that eating and drinking the body and blood of Christ is literal.
I can try to follow your logic, but when you can’t admit the shortcomings of your position and reveal the source of those shortcomings, it will be futile.
Take your time to re-read the scriptures already provided in post # 27 linked and latter in post # 38 linked. There is no short comings in God's Word.
Quite easily. I think your question here was brought up by your friend that was already addressed in some detail some time ago back in post # 96 linked if you want to go and have a read. Let's talk about the Apocrypha. To be clear, no Hebrew Old Testament ever included the books of the Apocrypha. Old Testament’ as we have it today is basically the Hebrew Bible, the Tanakh; but when Christians first developed an official canon, the Jews didn't have one—the ‘official canon’ concept was kind of novel. When Jews did get around to settling on a canon, and they considered roughly the same set of books, but accepted only ones written in Hebrew. The ‘Catholic’ canon also includes some scriptures from Jewish diaspora communities originally composed in other languages (generally or maybe universally Greek, the scholarly lingua franca of the Roman Empire). Protestants excluded the ‘Old Testament’ texts that weren't included by the Jews (so, disregarding compilation and translation choices, the standard Protestant OT is exactly the same material as the Tanakh). At the time of the Reformation, Protestants recognized as canonical books of the Bible the 39 Hebrew books recognized by the Jews and called by Christians the Old Testament, and the 27 Greek books universally accepted by Christians as the New Testament. In dispute were 12 books or parts of books written in Greek and referred to by Protestants as the Apocrypha, because their origins were “hidden”, that is, unknown.

The fundamental difference here is that the books of the Apocrypha are not included in the Hebrew Bible. The books of the Apocrypha only exist in Greek; there are no Hebrew texts of these books. Obviously they do not belong to the Old Testament, but also, neither do they belong to the New Testament as they were written and compiled before the birth of Christ. So in summary, the Old testament is the same as the Jewish Hebrew bible while the new testament is simply the writing and life of Jesus as the promised Messiah that the old testament scriptures pointed to and the writings of the Apostles that Jesus gave His Words to give to the world. The Apocrypha books do not fit in the Hebrew old testament and neither do they fit in the Greek or Aramaic new testament. That is why they are called Apocrypha because they do not fit in the old or new testament that make up the bible. Do you think that God is not in control of His Word and what he wants in the bible?
These circumstances show that sola scriptura is a fallacy. There has to be ecclesial authority to guide people to the truth. Christianity is a kingdom, not every man for himself
As shown all through this thread with the scriptures, there is no fallacy in scripture alone. There is only fallacy in not believing and following what God's Word says because our eternal life is conditional on believing and following what Gods' Word says according to the scriptures which is scripture alone. You are correct however when you say, "it is not every man for himself". It is only as we believe and follow God's Word as God guides us through His Spirit or not at all. Which is why the scriptures are the only rule of faith and why we are to live by every one of them. Therefore the only way to everlasting life is through the scriptures alone.

Take Care.

Yes but the question we are discussing is: is scripture required for the salvation of anyone. The answer is obviously no it is not

Have you been reading any of my posts Clint? Our salvation is absolutely dependent on believing and following what Gods' Word says alone. For example, if faith comes by the Word of God and without faith it is impossible to please God and whatsoever is not of faith is sin *Hebrews 11:6; Romans 14:23; how can any one of us have salvation if we have no faith when faith only comes by hearing and reading the Word of God? If we have no word we have no faith and we are still in our sins and do not have salvation which according to the scriptures only comes by faith through hearing or reading God's Word (sola scriptura) see also John 3:15-21; John 10:26-27; Matthew 7:22-26? Do you believe it is only by faith in God's Word that we have God's Grace trough faith *Ephesians 2:8-9? According to the scriptures, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God *Romans 10:17 and without faith it is impossible to please God *Hebrews 11:6 because whatsoever is not of faith is sin *Romans 14:23. Now if we only have salvation by faith in God's Word how can we have salvation without it? - We cannot. The only reason why scripture alone (Sola scriptura) was brought up in the 1500-1600's was because they Church had departed the faith (the Word of God) and those who were in it were trying to bring the church's attention back to the fact that they had departed the faith (Gods' Word). A teaching that the true church of God has always had from the very beginning of time *Hebrews 11. What these scriptures are telling us is that if we neglect Gods' Word we neglect our faith and therefore our salvation as we are saved by Gods' grace "through faith" *Ephesians 2:8-9 and faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God *Romans 10:17. Therefore we neglect Gods' Word we neglect our faith and Gods' salvation according to the scriptures. There is no salvation outside of faith in God's Word *see John 3:36

I think that the only thing I would ad is that before we can obtain faith, God needs to extend His grace to us through the Holy Spirit without that reading the word would be without meaning.

Absolutely Clint, but receiving God's Grace is not separate from faith. We actually receive the gift of God's grace by holding out our hands of faith in God's Word to receive it. That is why it is written in Ephesians 2:8 [8], For by grace are you saved through faith; (in Gods Word - Romans 10:17) and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.
