Secular music, ok or not?

Do you think it's ok to listen to music other than Christian?

  • Absolutely not, would Jesus?

  • As long as the lyrics are clean.

  • Depends completely on the artist.

Man, have I neglected my own thread or what? Sorry guys. Didn't think the conversation would get so heated. Anyway, with touchy subjects like this, that aren't clearly stated in the Bible to be neither right nor wrong, I believe it is one's own personal conviction whether or not you choose to listen to secular music. Like anything else.. pray that God will give you wisdom to know what you should and shouldn't be doing. Ok.. about that whole Lucifer deal....

Lucifer will be described in Ezekial 28:13 as being as beautiful, radiant, intelligent and pleasing to the eyes. Lucifer's name is interpreted as son of the morning and anointed cherub (read Ezekiel 28:14 and 16 for more details).

The Bible tells us that Lucifer was an archangel and
God made him responsible for music and leading the other angels in worship in heaven. Lucifer led the angelic beings in worship by singing and playing instruments. Lucifer's main responsibility was to use music to worship and praise God. If you read along further, especially in Isaiah 14, you will find out that Lucifer began to loose sight of his purpose and place. Pride definitely goes before destruction as poignantly illustrated in Isaiah chapter 14. Also the result of pride is indicated in St. Luke the 10th chapter and Ezekial chapter 28. Lucifer and his pride and preoccupation with himself is thrown out of Heaven down to the earth where he now resides. Lucifer began to believe that he deserved the glory and honor and not God the Father. This should cause those of us that minister through music to rethink our motives and be very mindful of why we sing, dance and play instruments. But as for just listening..well again..I believe that's a personal conviction. But as a singer myself, I believe that I was given the talent to glorify God. But I do listen to secular music..and I sing along with it..but in a different way than when I sing to, and for God. Alrighty, I hope this helps in some way. ;)

Ezek 28:
13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets [=timbrel, tambourine] and of thy pipes [some musical component] was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

MY Pastor's opinion is that all 3 archangels were originally worship angels b4 Lucifer's fall, simply cos there was no warring to do (Michael) and no messages to give (Gabriel) b4 lucifer fell and took 1/3 of the angels with him.

anyway, just a side note: Rem the song by Barry Manilow which goes something like:

I've been around forever....I am music and I write the songs.... I write the songs that make the whole world sing....

makes you wonder doesnt it, where the inspiration came from *L

Secular music? I just dont listen to those that are against Biblical teachings, beliefs and principles.

Ezek 28:

That was slightly mistranslated from the original Hebrew. Yes, timbrels, settings and tabrets are all translated as Taphaph (atleast collectly come from that word) and that means the playing of a tambourine, with the word settings meaning tambourine. But pipes was not a musical instrument, even though to us we would think it was. The Hebrew word is Neqeb, and that was a technical term relating to jeweller's work. Many believe that Taphaph was not in the orginal Hebrew, and it was confused with the duel barrrel meaning of Neqeb, which is translated as setting, sockets, hole, cavity, and groove. If you look at the rest of the verse you can see where this all relates, Lucifer was an angel of beauty and the symbolic usage of the stones described Lucifer's appearance. There is no evidence that Lucifer was in fact in charge of worship before God. There is evidence that he got jealous of the worship being presented to God. You see, all the angels were there to worship, that is their job!!! They, as well as we, were made to worship, to glorify God.

I like the word you chose to use, that it is your Pastor's opinion. It is a popular opinion, upon which I would like to expand. The word "angel" in Hebrew is "Mal'ak" and in Greek it is "aggelos", both means "messenger". This is a very clear indication of the purpose of angels - to tell a message. But about what? Well, who created them? God. Their purpose in life is the same as ours in one way - to tell people about God, to glorify his name, in breif - worship God. You see, so all angels were worship angels. Even though we know of Michael being a warrior angel, he was still a messenger!!!

But many people get really interwrapped with the role of Lucifer before the fall - lets remember who he is - the prince of evil spirits, in temporary charge of all that is evil. He would love us to argue over who he was and not concentrate on being a messenger. Our calling is to be a messenger - lets not forget that!!! When we tell people about God, when God's name is glorified, Lucifer hates that, really hates that!!! Lets make him really hate us!!!

Hope that helped!!!

There are very few types of music I don't listen to. Most of those I don't listen to are just a matter of taste. There are others I refuse to listen to as a matter of principle - "Christian Metal" for one. How is Christ glorified in a mosh pit?? Any music that superifically claim Christianity but preach a divided a house I will not listen to.

I'm obsessed with music, and I listen to as much of it as I can. I don't really separate secular music from Christian music in my mind; I listen to what I enjoy, and what I don't enjoy I ignore/make fun of. If you viewed my CD collection (or my mp3 collection) you would notice that I have extremely eclectic tastes; I have everything from La Boheme to Dave Brubeck to System of a Down. I don't discriminate by genre, and I don't discriminate by the convictions of the artist. The only real thing I refuse to listen to is anything that sounds too commercial (music that I would consider to be an advertisement for itself--pop music like Blink-182 or Avril Lavigne come to mind).

As a Christian, is it ok to listen to different types of music, other than Christian? And where should you draw the line with this?

It's fine as long as the lyrics don't blasphemy our Lord God.:)

max - that is very funny!!!! and sklippstein - just that my comment was the last one on it and then silence - either people agreed with what I said or were so disgusted with what I said they didn't want to reply - hehehehehe

nah, nevermind, music is so amazing, I was thinking how music can have such an effort in a movie. For example, watch a scarey suspensful screen with the sound turned off and it ain't that scarey, watch the same screen with the sound turned on and it can have you jumping out of your seat - it is amazing the difference that music can make!!!

Well Jesus didn't listen to Christian music... most likely Jewish hymns. But that's not Christian lol

I say the line comes where it starts to affect your attitude or your walk with God. If it does either of those, then you need to quit listenin cause it's not worth it in the long run.
