Hello ,

This thread is to discuss the differences between Unitarian Universalism(In America 19th century) and Patristic Universalism.

When I say Patristic Universalism I am referring to the Universalism that originated in the third century.

For me there is no difference. Both teachings of Universalism are false teaching that teach the unbelieving unrepentant wicked will receive everlasting life and that Jesus was mistaken when he says those who do not believe Gods' Word will not see life in John 3:36 promoting rather the lies of the serpent to Even in Genesis 3:1-5 that we can disobey Gods' Word and not surely die. I think we are better off staying with what Gods' Word says to be honest.

What do the scripture teach happen to the unrepentant wicked (linked)?

Take Care all.

Sure. As far as I know Unitarians reject the trinity and hell. They also teach pluralism, that all religions are equal paths to finding God. They broke away from the American Christian Universalist church. Christian universalist believe the trinity and purgatorial hell, and that Christ is the only way. That pretty much sums it up.

From what I understand hell is the presence of God, even if over the eons and eons one is purified in this lake of fire, the sinful personality would be gone. So a blank slate soul/spirit may emerge, but the person who used to exist would be totally dead. It's not really good news, the end result to the person isn't different from eternal torment. However, it does paint a different picture of who God is.

It also gives proper meaning to a popular universalist verse saying, "because God is saving everybody, we labor and strive to spread the gospel."

That passage illustrates something fundamentally wrong with the church doctrine, in that it is common to teach "because God is not going to save everyone, we must guilt trip all christians to spread the gospel."

So that's something anyway. My personal perspective is from that Ephesians verse in that "God will do more than we can imagine or think" which basically applies to everything we think, including how judgment goes down. It's entirely reasonable to dismiss universalism, eternal torment, and annihilationism on this count - because we have conceived it in our minds, God will do something else that we cannot imagine.
