Why is it directly the government's business at all? Baby formula is a commodity in a free market economy. Right now there is a shortage due to the shutdown of a major producer. The one thing the government could do immediately is to lift Trump's tariff on imported baby formula from Canada.
This situation is very much a government created problem.

U.S. FDA says baby formula crisis will ease in coming weeks

Just to put it on context. U.S. baby formula market is worth 4 billion dollars. How much of a dent few pallets make ?

Astounding that half of the US mothers use this stuff. No wonder kids get sick, have allergies and whatnot.

Anyway the corrective measures are on their way and in few weeks people can once again lose their money by giving their children inferior product.

Strange world.
Congress said they will hold a hearing--in two weeks. We get laughter from the administration.

So are vaccines, internet access, smartphones, and food (and in the case of Ukraine, weapons). Yet the government is involved in subsidizing or giving away all these things. For illegals, it's baby formula, which Americans are having a hard time getting even though they actually pay for it.

Only American babies matter, why am I not surprised.

Where are they from? Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, etc.? They can get their baby formula from their own country.

Are they having a hard time getting it because it's being given away to illegals?

As someone recently asked, "Why is it directly the government's business at all?"

If they're American, then yes. If they're being brought over illegally through biden's open border, then no.
I hope that answers your question.

You do realize right now we are also getting Ukrainian refugees at the southern border.

I realize we're getting border crossers at the Mexican border from nearly every country on Earth, including Russia, Afghanistan, Iran, and any other country that is hostile to us. It's an indication that everyone in the world knows that if you want to illegally enter America, the Mexican border is the place to do it.
Too bad our own federal government hasn't realized it yet.

Statistically, the easiest way is to come in on a visa and get lost. Only the poor and desperate have to trek across the desert

They know it... But it's not reason to allow infants to starve there either...

I'm sorry, I just can't stand with you on this. Moms who have homes and internet etc have resources that people trying to cross our southern border just don't have..

And drug smugglers, like the one that a Border Patrol agent lost his life to save.

Then those people shouldn't be trying to cross our southern border. They could instead provide for their children at home rather than crossing national borders illegally.

At border crossings we have always been open to refugees...

While some are trying to cross illegally, those we are giving formula too have applied for asylum - otherwise we wouldn't be handing out formula to their infants.

People specifically go to that border crossing intentionally because it's the easiest one to get through - even for those wanting to come legally.

Calm down, a few pallets of formula aren't going to do much in America proper, and it's not the cause of the shortage we have.

American mother's will be struggling for the next 12 weeks whether we allow babies coming into the united states to starve or not.

Tell that to American mothers who can't feed their babies. Tell them that if they're at all angry about not being able to feed their babies while illegals can come and get it, they're the ones who are in the wrong.

I too would be somewhat frustrated if indeed whole pallets of formula containing 'thousands and thousands' of tins had just been diverted to the border. Seems like overkill to me and it is also apparent that Cammack was trying to make political mileage out of it. Hence my request for any sort of confirmation that the story is true. Nothing yet.

Notwithstanding that it is a legal requirement to provide suitable food and water. The 1997 Flores Agreement makes it so. The Biden admin would be breaking the law by not providing it.

And here's some details for you. I can't find the number of nursing mothers detained but here's a figure for pregnant women: Biden administration bars ICE from detaining pregnant or nursing women

'The highest number of arrests occurred in fiscal year 2018, when ICE detained 1,459 pregnant women.'

And from the same link:

'Citing a commitment to making the U.S. immigration system more "humane," the Biden administration announced Friday that it barred Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from detaining pregnant or nursing women, absent "exceptional circumstances."

That was in July of last year. So excepting 'exceptional circumstances', no nursing women are being detained. But let's assume that number is the same as the pregnant women in the record year of 2018.

So if you do the maths then the absolute maximum number of tins of baby formula needed, assuming that ICE is completely ignoring this admins orders and assuming that they are holding a record number of women with children that require formula is...4 tins per day. Which is about $100 worth.

Do you know the amount of baby formula sold in the US? In 2020 it was $4 billion dollars. Sales of baby milk formula by type U.S. 2020 | Statista

If you're looking at absolutely worse case numbers, detention centres are using 0.00001% of the available formula.

And hey, if the Ursula detention centre runs out, one of their guys can drive over to their nearest supermarket and get some more. The Walmart in Mcallen has 23 different types on its shelves. Maybe that's where they got it from...

The biden admin is already breaking the law. The "Remain in Mexico" policy that he terminated is an example: Federal Judge Reinstates “Remain in Mexico,” Ruling Biden Broke Law in Terminating Policy

Even with the ruling, people are still not required to stay in Mexico. So it doesn't appear that staying within the law has anything to do with biden's decisions.

That's a different matter. Do you have a comment on the matter at hand and what I posted? Wouldn't you agree that this is something of a very large mountain being made of an incredibly small molehill?

Four cans of formula per day is a big deal?

The problem is that the administration knew the major plant was shut down, and they did nothing to make up for the lost supplies while continuing to lie about a supposedly secure, under control border.

The problem is that the administration knew the major plant was shut down, and they did nothing to make up for the lost supplies while continuing to lie about a supposedly secure, under control border. People should not have to die making that long trek or face a dire situation just because they are likely to vote for Democrats.

I understand people are just trying to make a point.

Yes, the Biden administration should have been on top of this shortage from the beginning, and they weren't. Whether bad at running the government or intentionally attacking our next generation I don't know, but they didn't do what they should have.

Yes the border is a problem. Been complaining about this for years myself.

But the outcry about women at the border getting formula in the middle of a shortage just doesn't have a good spirit behind it when what's at the border won't even be a drop in the bucket of plugging the hole that is the shortage.

Better than complaining about mother's at the border getting formula for their babies, is to start lighting a fire to get this administration to do more to fix this shortage.

Because I for one don't see it as Christian to demand we start starving babies at our southern border, and I'll not be party to any outrage over us making sure mother's coming in as refugees have a little formula. That simply doesn't make me upset in the least.

And honestly? I have no understanding of those who truly are upset about it.

There is a humanitarian crisis at the border due to the Biden administration policies. Democrats have proposed sending doctors from the Veterans administration to the border. This will mean waiting lists at the VA will get even longer. So the complaint is not against humanitarian needs, it is about the continual creating of problems with seemingly letter concern for the outcome and the victims. Democrats in control could have gone to other countries for supplies, the problem did not just pop up today, yet instead of making sure all are taken care of they are out using taxpayer money to but Peleton memberships.
