Government policies over the past decade are also part of the problem.

As Lincicome has noted on Twitter, imports of infant formula are subject to tariff-rate quotas of 17.5 percent after certain thresholds are met. As the name suggests, tariff-rate quotas are meant to be set high enough that they effectively block additional imports by making it unprofitable to pay the tariff. In a year like this one, when domestic supplies are flagging and more formula is needed, that creates a serious impediment for suppliers.

Oh that's easily remedied with a national emergency declaration due to food shortages... They can temporarily block additional tarrifs on food products (of which baby formula would qualify as)

The Fox News story clearly says "GOP rep says illegal migrants sent pallets..." I would think that there is a difference between CBP and illegal migrants. I would hope that Fox News would report fair and balanced news.

Chile, Ireland, Mexico and the Netherlands are potential sources for additional imports, according to the officials.

Abbott Nutrition, the nation’s largest baby formula manufacturer, issued a recall in February for several powered formulas. The move came after four infants who consumed products from its Sturgis, Michigan, plant were hospitalized with infections from the bacteria Cronobacter sakazakii. Two of the infants died.

That there's a lack of formula available (due mainly to a Michigan plant being shut down because of contaminated powder) is a problem. But there's very little righteous anger available there unless you can tie it in to the current administration. This is a pretty desperate attempt to do so.

Tell that to American mothers who can't feed their babies. Tell them that if they're at all angry about not being able to feed their babies while illegals can come and get it, they're the ones who are in the wrong.

Just to put it on context. U.S. baby formula market is worth 4 billion dollars. How much of a dent few pallets make ?

Astounding that half of the US mothers use this stuff. No wonder kids get sick, have allergies and whatnot.

Anyway the corrective measures are on their way and in few weeks people can once again lose their money by giving their children inferior product.

No, the baby formula is not important. There is a shortage of baby formula and it's cause is well known except to conservatives. But the important thing is that it provides a basis for the story that Biden is confiscating baby formula from loyal American babies, snatching it practically from their mouths, to give it away free to criminal aliens. That's too good a story to let facts get in the way of.

People just don't understand the lack of compassion in Washington. So many there seem little concerned with the plight of the American people, yet people keep voting them in. COVID was a perfect example on how so many who make rules for other flaunt the rules for themselves. Congress and Joe could be working on solving these problems, Joe or Kamala could be meeting with the manufacturers. What is the government focusing on besides wokeness and declaring parents who speak up to school boards domestic terrorists ?

Why is it directly the government's business at all? Baby formula is a commodity in a free market economy. Right now there is a shortage due to the shutdown of a major producer. The one thing the government could do immediately is to lift Trump's tariff on imported baby formula from Canada.

US working mothers are not guaranteed leave after birth. Many go back to work in as little as four weeks. Breastfeeding while being away from your child all day is challenging to say the least.
