I just found a $100 bill.

Not sure why the money was even picked up if you did not desire it. Seems the best course of action is to put it back where you found it and never pick up anything from the street again that you did not drop yourself. You could be holding onto something that a family in need could have found and used for a needed meal.

I would like to add to my previous post by stressing the need not to become overly scrupulous. Sometimes the correct answer is the one that first pops up in your mind, namely to stuff that bill in your wallet and go on with the rest of your day.
Anyways, 100 dollars are not THAT much money to begin with so its not like your finding a briefcase full of cash or whatnot. Its "just" 100 dollars and its yours to keep if you stumble across it on the street. Morally these things often level themselves out. One time you come across 100 dollars in your life, another time you come home only to discover that hole in your pocket and curse yourself for dropping your money somewhere on the street.

This kind of remind me of the moral issue of recieving the wrong amount back from the register at your local supermarket. If you're already back at your house and find out that you've been undercharged one can assume that it just levels things. Most of the times you're being overcharged and those rare occasions where the mistake is done in your favor only levels the injustice out. Its a zero sum game in the end.

Scrupulously thought pattern. If the OP decided to leave it on the sidewalk then someone else whos not the rightful owner would pick it up instead in 99 per cent of time. Keep it and thank God is my response.

If it does get claimed then you have done the ethical thing. If it does not then eventually it is yours free and clear. Both in law and conscious.

Unless the serial number in that drug deal or mugging happened to have been recovered, how could it be admitted as evidence?

Kind of thought there was a picture of the person on a

100 dollar note, but he most probably died.

So he has no use for the money anyhow.

It's really not a lot of money these days. It's unusual to find $100 bill laying around, but it's not going to change anyone's life. I've certainly lost more money than I've found.

It would be almost impossible to find the owner. I wouldn't give it to the police. If I dropped a hundred-dollar bill out in public, I'd not expect to get it back. I'd learn a valuable lesson to take better care of my cash. If it were me I'd turn the money over to a charity or buy food to give to a food bank. I'd not want to keep it myself because I don't believe in keeping or asking for the unearned.

Years ago I found $500 in the parking lot of my building, but it was in a money clip with a distinctive design. So I put a card on the bulletin board saying that I'd found money in a clip and offering to return it to whoever could describe the clip.

Welp, someone did. So I returned the money. He did give me $100 of it back, though.

But just a loose $100 bill as described by the OP would be impossible to return to its rightful owner. Others have given good suggestions to be charitable with it. That's about the best that can be done.

I disagree,. Losing that huge amount is unheard of. Usually a 1 or 5 or 10, etc. A hundred they would never guess it the first time. No second chances in guessing in this case.

Give $50 to a charity, and with the other $50 buy a nice bourbon (Maker’s Mark 46 is good. And you’ll have a few bucks left.) You’ll be all set to invite your buddies over to have mint juleps and watch the KY Derby next month. :oldthumbsup:

How can you pick up money from the street, put it in the church and call it a tithe? This is dishonest at best....especially if you write off donations during tax time.

Leaving the money where it was would be better than picking it up and then giving it to a person on the street......as if you were giving something you worked for and deserved thanks.

We've made a non-issue, an issue. Pick it up and use it for yourself, or leave it and let someone else use it for themselves.
