Is this a proper rationale for the invasion, no, but he will probably be able to sell it to a Russian nationalist public.

...and to American nationalist who sympathize with and even admire Putin.

There's a lot of closet fascists who are secretly thrilled by the potentialities of a "strongman" sort of character, especially if he's allied with traditional religion.

Except that the rebels only actually control 1/3rd of the territory of these republics. So will the peacekeepers have to drive the Ukrainians out of the rest?

We'll see. They will do what they have to do to end the slaughter there.

You're not aware of what the Ukrainian army has been doing in Donbass? The shelling of Donetsk alone killed over a thousand civilians. Russia's troops are there to ensure that Kiev honors the Minsk agreements.

Putin himself said that the Minsk agreement is dead (and has been for some time). Get with the current propaganda, comrade.

Could you point to where you're getting this thousand from? The shelling implies a single round of attack, but from the recent articles I've been looking up from various sources, I don't find anything matching your description. The only figure like that that I could find was the total civilian deaths since 2014 with about 350 of those deaths since 2016. And you are even assuming that from the shellings that did happen, that all of them had to be Ukrainian. Wouldn't be the first time Russia shelled their own so they could point the finger at their opponent.

Russia's troops are there to invade and claim territory for themselves, don't fool yourself or try to do the same to anyone else.

In other news : Trump praises Putin as 'savvy' amid new escalations on Russia-Ukraine border

"I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, 'This is genius.' Putin declares a big portion ... of Ukraine, Putin declares it as independent," Trump said in an interview Tuesday on the conservative Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show.

Quite obviously, at points in the past, Mother Russia believed that the whole world was her children ...

Like we don't? Lol... The U.S. is nothing if not hypocritical...

How about the really fun idea that we don't need to rule the world? I don't care about Ukraine... We've got more important concerns right here at home. Let others worry about themselves for a change...

How widespread is support of Putin among American conservatives?

I don't know...

I'm personally just sick of our U.S. foreign policy decisions being dictated by the private financial interests of the party in power, instead of the very real interests of the American people. (See Bush, the Clintons, Biden etc)

When was the last time something Putin did affect your every day life versus China?

Communist China affects us every single day and twice on Sunday's but we are going after Putin who doesn't affect us at all and are threatening WW3 over it?

It's beyond stupid. We need out of this nonsense and decide to actually represent the interests of Americans. Our elected leaders need to stop enriching themselves off the blood of our sons and daughters... Like yesterday.

What nations has the US threatened with conquest in the last 200 years ?

In the last 100 years, Russia seized control of no less than a dozen of its neighboring countries.

And in the time that they held sway over Ukraine, they purposely starved millions of Ukrainians by taking their crops. Is it any wonder that the Ukrainians have no wish to be under that kind of control again ?

America does have its sins ... but Russia tops every other country, except perhaps Communist China, ... for the evil and misery they unearthed upon the planet.

I grew up participating in Duck' shelter exercises in school because Russian nuclear missiles were pointed at American cities. I have no doubt that they still are.

Khrushchev, Breshnev operated with the goal of burying the US, ... and not just figuratively or economically.

China has never been that kind of threat, though, I'm sure, it's not for lack of trying ...

The good news is that the US policy is Ukraine has nothing to do with anybody benefiting financially. Ukraine is the poorest country in Europe.

This is about containing Russia and China in defying a rules based order. Might doesn't make right.

I see you have been watching Tucker Carlson and repeating his argument here.

Since the WW2, regardless of which party in WH, America has been the strongest ally of Europe. Any threat to Europe is a threat to America. This has been American foreign policy for past 80 years. There is no “privet financial interest” in this US foreign policy. Until Trump came to power, no sensible American thought it is better to side with Russia then Euro nation.

Of course, both Russia and the USA are newborns by comparison to many European countries.

I mean, not really. The borders of Europe have changed dramatically since 1776, particularly in Germany (which didn't even exist at the time) and points east of that. France, Spain and Portugal have basically stayed the same. The United Kingdom didn't exist until 1801, before which Ireland and Great Britain were governed separately. The peoples of Europe, sure, precede the modern American state, but most of the states in Europe are relatively young.

Interesting how your opinion matches the Russian government's propaganda.
