RDKirk wins on a Godwin.

It's a legit question. I didn't compare my opponent to Hitler BTW. Bogus claim.

Like maybe because they were murdering the Jewish people in gas furnaces?

See above. I supposed you knew it was the Nazis doing that.

He didn't compare his opponent to Nazis. He hypothesised about whether vioent overthrow of a Nazi government would be justified. Is that the same thing? Sunds different to me.

Reasonable.

Godwin's law, short for Godwin's law (or rule) of Nazi analogies,[1][2] is an Internet adage asserting that as an online discussion grows longer (regardless of topic or scope), the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Adolf Hitler approaches 1.[2][3] In less mathematical terms, the longer the discussion, the more likely a Nazi comparison becomes, and with long enough discussions, it is a certainty.

It would not be for Christians to overthrow that government. That was true even when the Romans were burning Christians.

The spirit of rebellion is incompatible with Christianity.
So Dietrich Bonhoeffer was wrong? So, Jews and Christians should let themselves be slaughtered because of who they are?
So we should all be British?

Doing what? I didn't compare the guy I was talking to to Hitler so it's a false claim. Quit making stuff up.

Bonhoeffer did not foment revolution, nor did he participate in revolution. Don't conflate dissent with rebellion.

Bonhoeffer did join the German effort to assassinate Hitler.

That's what the Nazis claimed in order to execute him.

And, at any rate, Bonhoeffer is not the proof of the Christian pudding. Christ is. The myriad of Christian martyrs, staring with the apostles, are.

Scripture is very clear about the requirement for Christians to respect earthly authorities.

Let's see what God actually allowed in history.

Hebrew midwives disobeyed Pharaoh’s command to kill newborn boys (Exodus 1:17; cf. Hebrews 11:23). Queen Esther broke the Persian law by going to King Ahasuerus to plead for the Jews (Esther 4:16).

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego disobeyed Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, when he commanded them to worship his golden image.

Daniel disobeyed King Darius’ rule on prayer to anyone except the king (Daniel 6:7-10).

Peter and John disobeyed the Jewish authorities when they told them to stop preaching Jesus.

In Acts 5:29, Peter and the apostles said, “We must obey God rather than men.”

Okay, I guess you really don't understand the difference between dissent and rebellion.

Do you also think Martin Luther King was fomenting a rebellion to overthrow the government of the United States?
