Hindsight is 2020 - but military tactics seldom change:

A month before the withdrawal - when Biden was fully aware of imminent collapse when he withdrew the troops there were 10,000 trained and well equipped troops on the ground in Afghanistan (between US and allied forces) - There was a fully functioning Air Base (Bagram) that included:

208 aircraft including jets, helicopters and fighters
600,000 small arms weapons
2,000 Armored Personal Carriers
30,000,000 round of ammunition

All in a secured base with a one mile perimeter that had never been breached in 20 years.

Biden could have used the troops and equipment to do a controlled evacuation of personnel, moving them by Armored Carriers to Bagram and flown out on the aircraft already there. When it was obvious in the coming weeks that the country was collapsing AFTER the civilians were rescued safely then the troops are removed -

There is a formal procedure showing a command change, at that point, they could have turned the base over formally to the Afghanistan military or if that was not going to happen - a controlled detonation would have destroyed the left equipment and ammunition.

Instead our Commander in Chief emptied the base in the middle of the night informing no one - removed our fighting men and then left our citizens on their own to make it to an airport in the middle of the city that was smaller and had shorter and less runways than Bagram.

Evacuations is always -

1. Citizens first
2. Local aids - second
3. Allied personnel - third
4. Troops last

The funniest part of this entire, whatever, is that it plays on the assumption that Biden was making all these decisions while the military, the Generals and their logistics sat there doing nothing while Biden called all the shots!

He is Commander in Chief - it was a major withdrawal - if he gave operational control to anyone else - he lied again, because he said he orchestrated it and his generals and staff were in 100% agreement with him. Have you served? Have you put on the uniform and picked up a weapon?

His military, the Generals and their logistic were NOT in agreement with Joe's actions that is what this whole thread is about.

I know it is uncomfortable for the Biden defenders, but there is where we are and this is what he did and did not do.

Exactly.

The fact is, US had stood down it's forces to a point where only the US Embassy compound and the nearby airport could be defended to facilitate an evacuation. Regardless of the politically driven 2nd guessing, the fact remains that in order to remove one's forces, those left at the end will be dependent on foreign forces for security. And in this case, no one anticipated the rapid collapse of the Afghan military and the abandonment thereof by the government in Kabul.

Another way in which the thread is a failure is that the story in the OP is about the eventual collapse of the Afghani Air Force due to its inability to maintain its aircraft. It is not about the collapse and capitulation of the entire Afghani government within days of the Americans leaving. This didn't happen because the Afghanis couldn't provide air cover.

No I am talking about his comments about a small incursion being allowable. That fails to meet the test of strength, Putin will jump all over the weakness that Biden shows as a leader and so far all we have seen is weakness from this administration.
