Telling a HALF TRUTH is really telling a HALF LIE....

This morning we read the story of Abraham, Sarah and Abimelech...

Abraham told a HALF TRUTH when he told Abimelech that Sarah was his sister....it caused Abimelech to take Sarah from Abraham, and he was going to make her his wife. God gave Abimelech a dream and laid out the TRUTH to him....

We should never think that telling HALF TRUTHS is acceptable and that God is OK with that.

Read Genesis 20 in a modern translation...a very interesting Chapter...

Determining the whole truth these days is often not very easy. Advertising people tell us carefully crafted sentances all the time and a lot of the time, we don't realise that what they have told us does not mean quite what we thought it meant. They know have to get us to latch onto the bits, which we want to hear and while our brain are processing that, we are not fully concentrating on the next piece of infomation.

Advertising people are taught how to do this seemlessly, so that we don't manage to fully process, what is being said before they move on to the next interesting piece of infomation. We need to not only listen with our ears, but also with our brains as well. How often does something which sounds right not get fully processed by our brains. We all do it! We all are capable of being duped and we need to know that!

A slick presentation generally wins most of the time. Something which sounds right, usually attracts a lot less of our attention and can seriously affect our judgement and stuff which we think sounds truth gets passed on to others as true, because we have believed a half truth and not realised it. We live in an age of deception and it's not just deception when it comes to bibical truths. It's everwhere and we don't always realise what's going on.

We can compare that story with 1 Samuel 16

The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided a king for myself among his sons."

Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me." The LORD said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.

That's what you call a convenient truth! Since the heifer would be sacrificed it is still true!

So when I'm at an airport, and I ask the ticket agent "How often do your planes crash?", and she answers "Only once." is that a sin or not, since it is a technically accurate response.

Yes, still true. But not the whole truth.

God would not tell a lie! Of course it's the truth, he not going to take the heifer with him, only to bring it back afterwards, of course He's going to sacrifice the heifer. Why would he do otherwise, if that what God has told Him to do?

Yes, it's true, but it's not the whole truth.

God tells Samuel to anoint someone else king. Samuel says if Saul hears about it, he will kill him. God says take along a sacrifice, and say that's what you're there for.
