our teen lost 2 grandparents last year
both were active in life with one biking, even 100 mile rides
other used to jog up to 20 miles on weekends & rollerblade

what is surprising to me is that these two active grandparents died before a grandmother

grandmother is still alive
she never exercised, rarely ate frts/veggies, and ate lots of junk food her whole life

why do the more healthy die before someone who never took care of themselves?

I can't figure it out
Because it's almost entirely genetic. Choose your parents carefully, as the saying goes. I work out because I enjoy it. It will help maximize whatever my genetic longevity profile is, but it won't accomplish any miracles.

Genes play a big part.... I was not born healthy, but I'm very strict in my diet and lifestyle....if I were not, it's quite possible I would already be 6' under.

You did not tell us what was the cause of deaths, if cancer, heart attack, covid or car accident, it also plays a role, indeed.

Information "two died and one is still alive" is too insufficient to determine "why". There are dozens of variables in play and for example heavy smokers or drinkers, even if excercising, will not live longer than somebody who does not move, but does not smoke.

no cause of deaths given to us but possibly age related?
both late 80s & neither smoked

just so surprised that the grandmother is still living considering lack of taking care of health their entire life

maybe it doesn't even matter if one doesn't exercise/eat healthy?

It may be because of many variables, for example low level of stress in her life, clean air/water, good genetics, easy job so her body is not too damaged...etc.

It does. There are always some few exceptions like 1 in 10 who live long drinking, smoking or eating junk food, but they would not live shorter lives eating healthy. And regarding the rest 9 in 10, healthy lifestyle will help them significantly. So its for everyone.

So if she eats junk food but for example fast frequently or was not having too much food during her life, it may be it.

no fasting & overeater
very obese

two who died in 2020- normal weight
maybe even a little underweight

Early cardiovascular disease can occur in people who are normal weight and eat a "healthy diet".

Most government and advisory bodies give out very conservative advice in terms of heart disease prevention, wholely inadequate to actually prevent the disease altogether in most people, because it would involve a radical change in many peoples diets in western countries.

Check out Weston Price. He demonstrated the effect of the American diet on different cultures and made a link between genetics and location.

He suggested the body would be more responsive to foods native to your area or your genetic profile than adopting another.

The Blue Zones, Real Food, and Nourishing Traditions are worth reading too.

Proverbs 30:8
Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:

Unfortunately, I can't find the study, but researchers found that women from one culture absorbed nutrients better from familiar food than foreign and vice versa. They switched diets half way through the study. I don't think this implies that you can't get good nutrition from less familiar foods, just that there is a component related to how well your body, or perhaps mind, knows a particular food.

Unfortunately, I can't find the study

Price traveled the world over in order to study isolated human groups, including sequestered villages in Switzerland, Gaelic communities in the Outer Hebrides, Eskimos and Indians of North America, Melanesian and Polynesian South Sea Islanders, African tribes, Australian Aborigines, New Zealand Maori and the Indians of South America.

Wherever he went, Dr. Price found that beautiful straight teeth, freedom from decay, stalwart bodies, resistance to disease and fine characters were typical of native peoples on their traditional diets, rich in essential food factors.

When Dr. Price analyzed the foods used by isolated indigenous peoples he found that they provided at least four times the calcium and other minerals, and at least TEN times the fat-soluble vitamins from animal foods such as butter, fish eggs, shellfish and organ meats.

The “primitive” Seminole girl (left) has a wide,
handsome face with plenty of room for the dental arches. The “modernized” Seminole girl (right) born to parents who had abandoned their traditional diets, has a narrowed face, crowded teeth, and a reduced immunity to disease.

Environment is also a huge factor. My great grand parents lived almost 100 years. We had genes that is quite resistant to ageing. At 40, many people still think I'm in my 20's or possibly faking my indentity.

Since them, my grandparents lived at the edge of the city and ultimately, my parents living in the city.

Grand parents died in their 70's. One parent already died in his 60's and another still alive have survived cancer and stroke.

The lineage has always dealt with poverty. But poverty in the city is the worst. Poverty in rural areas maybe not so stressful and great grand parents lived almost entirely off the land. No processed foods, very little meat, everything organic (literally).

As for me, I'm already dealing with hypertension. Too early at the age of 40 with good genes. I keep it at bay with hard cardio exercises everyday. If I stop exercising for one week my blood pressure climbs and I get sharp chest pains right at my heart!

You may have good genes but stress will cut it short. Don't make mistakes with your life, listen to good and wise counsel (they may not always be your parents). Some mistakes can be very difficult to fix and force you to deal with insurmountable stress and kill you.. You can't learn from your mistakes if you're dead.
