Some districts may set up a (temporary or permanent) subcommittee to evaluate books that come under question and advise as necessary, but by and large, the school board has the last word.
And what makes them a moral authority?

Then parents have every right to demand certain books not be made available to children.

Of course they have the right to demand it... This is America; you can demand whatever you want. Who suggested otherwise?

Does the fact that they have the right to make those demands automatically make those demands worthy of serious consideration? No.

Is this or any other school board under any obligation to comply to those demands? No.

That doesn’t seem to be the opinion of many in this thread.

Instead of relying on the school or public librarians to inform on your child, why not just ask the child what he is reading? That can be an interesting (or boring, depending on tastes) dinner table conversation.

You are probably in support of schools taking girls to get abortions and not notifying their parents. And if not, your argument fails.
A child checking out a book on her on volition is not the same as the school taking her for a medical procedure. Everyone but you seems to understand that.
No I’m comparing informing parents about a book (which was humorously called Big Brother) and informing about an abortion.
No, not just informing them about an abortion, but actually taking the girls to get one, presumably with the girls' consent.

If a girl got one on her own, then told the nurse or school counselor about it - should the school break confidence and inform on the child? I think the answer is complex depending on the age of the girls (e.g. with a ten year old it is a police/child safety matter but with a seventeen year old, it may or may not be).

Check post #325 -- either that's you, or your account's been hacked.
Your gnosisticism is on the fritz. I’m not worried. There’s nothing in that post that implies I’m worried.

You might just want to take my word for it.

Sorry, but I was talking about informing parents. I know this because I’m the one who wrote it.

You might just want to take my word for it.

That would raise questions involving credibility and credulousness which are best left unasked.

But would you prefer the word "concerned"?
"Piqued"?
"Curious," even?

Not quite, I don't think. They don't have the right to demand that book is not available to OTHER PEOPLE'S chilren.

Only their own.
Good grief. Okay, back to the beginning. Who decides that the book is there in the first place?

You made an analogy by bringing up abortion and saying that that either we agreed that taking a child for an abortion and not informing parents is the same as not informing them when they check out a book from a library .

Assuming you know what an analogy is, you'd understand that you were NOT comparing "informing parents" (since you can't "compare" one thing anyways) but comparing situations.

I'm really surprised that this is confusing?

Do you ask everyone why they post what they do in each thread? Or am I just special?
