I’m not sure if this is the right forum to post this in (sorry if it’s not) but -

About a year and a half ago, my family was praying about finding the right house for us to move in to. My Dad would walk around the house, touching different parts and praying over the house, the family that would move into it, and our new house. He prayed in tongues.
He said that when he was younger, a pastor prayed over him and, after that, he was able to speak in tongues.
One day, after praying in tongues, he asked me if I would like to speak in tongues. I said yes, barely able to speak because of excitement about what was about to happen.
My Dad prayed over me, and at the end of the prayer he asked me if I had anything to pray. I didn’t. I couldn’t even think of what to say in English. We waited a few minutes, but nothing happened. My Dad said that maybe I had to read the Bible and spend more time with God before he revealed my spiritual gifts.
So every day (for maybe a week - but this is something I need to start doing again) I would spend large amounts of time reading the Bible and talking to God. Nothing happened. It’s been over a year now. Nothing has happened.
Did my dad not have the authority to pray a prayer like that? Is my past connection with Satan affecting my present and future walk with God, and only God? Am I just not meant to have spiritual gifts? What happened?

God will give spiritual gifts as He sees fit. It’s a problem when people think they can disperse them through prayers rooted in their own will. I think it’s dangerous to do that and makes many stumble in their walk. People that proclaim their own gifts are often fooling themselves. If you have a gift, others will see the fruit and recognize it.

Yes, as a believer you have spiritual gifts. "A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good:" (I Cor 12:7). That chapter gives us some of the spiritual gifts listed in Scripture that are given by the Holy Spirit. Every believer can be used for His purposes.

According to forum guidelines,, this forum is for believers who believe in speaking in tongues. So yes you are in the correct forum. Books have been written on this Biblical topic. But the bottom line is...

There's a diversities of tongues (I Cor 12:28). Usually referred to as private prayer language and tongues for interpretation. Tongues/His Spirit languages are available to every believer since tongues are a sign - To unbelievers By believers ("Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: ....I Cor 14:22 and Mark 16:17) With the groups that received tongues in Scripture, it states "all" that were there received except outside the Upper Room where there were mockers of tongues (Acts 2; 4:31; 10:44-46; 19:2-6) Also, there are other Scriptures such as "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;..." Mark 16:17

Your dad didn't do anything wrong. "Of 'the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment." Heb 6:2
"Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost." Acts 8:17

But - this is important - "Lay hands suddenly on no man..." (I Tim 5:22). That works both ways - those laying hands on others or on the receiving end. To me that means follow the Holy Spirit's guidance.

Jesus modeled how we are to live and grow, His first miracle was turning the water into wine, He grew to raising Lazarus. We are all to grow as He grew, the indwelling Holy spirit is the power through which we each grow, every gift Jesus manifested is available to every believer.
Blank you mind, telll the Father you will begin to form words and give Him the control over the words that He knows you need to pray, He will do so, when you get it right He will shower you with His presence as He is so very proud of you. You can't miss it.

You’re inability to speak in tongues isn’t a reflection of prior actions or a failure of his prayers. Tongues are a gift bestowed by the Holy Spirit. One of many. Don’t dismay. If you answered the call your place is assigned and He’ll prepare you for the work.

Ask the Lord to reveal your mission and guide you in its undertaking. Acknowledge your desire to serve Him and fulfill your calling. Express your willingness to learn and acquire the skills you need to bring it to pass. And He’ll respond.

Some use spiritual gift tests as a springboard for greater insight. This is a helpful resource on the subject. They provide numerous examples of the gift in action and how it may be applied in various settings. In the church and other areas.

Tongues is the miraculous ability to speak other languages on demand. It's not jibberish. I think your dad is a bit confused. He expected too much. Miracles are real but by putting you on the spot and waiting for you to start speaking fluent Hebrew or something, isn't wise. If you were a missionary and there was a tribe that spoke a rare language, and suddenly, miraculously, you could speak fluently to them, that is tongues. Acts 2 is a good reference.

But I think it's wise not to argue with your dad, just pray for him.

List of Biblical purposes for tongues includes:
-Personal prayer language - Speaking to/with God
-Intercessory prayer language - Praying for others in the Spirit
-Warfare language - Tongues directly aimed at demonic strongholds
-Prophetic language - Addressing the whole church/preferably with interpretation
-Singing in the Spirit - Singing in tongues/worship activity
-Praise language - Magnifying the Lord in worship tongues
-Evangelistic language - Speaking the message of God to a people in their own language (not yours)

There's over 6500 languages and some are unusual including clicking sounds.
