An artist can pretty much create whatever they want. What's important is where it's displayed and how it's received.
Well, this "art" is quite revealing of the nature of our times.

I'm sure people have been making disgusting pictures like that for centuries. What's revealing is how it's regarded by the public.

An artist in Germany picked a controversial way to explore the taboo of sexuality by adding explicit details to Greek Orthodox Church icons.

The bizarre action has sparked debate over whether it’s merely art – or blasphemy, RT reported.
German Artist "explores Sexuality" By Adding Explicit Details To Greek Orthodox Icons — Greek City Times.

its not art, its just stupid...some looser that is just trying to get press because they have no actual talent...

Ooooh super edgy. Notice though that "artists" target Christianity. I use "artists" in quotes because traditional art is to highlight beauty whether it be audio, visual, etc; and beauty is an energy of God, or a result of a person's love of God, etc. Either way, beauty and the acknowledgement of beauty has something to do with God.

There's a really good documentary about beauty by Roger Scruton below.

It's no surprise that a person devoid of love for God is taken to the lowest common denominator.

"....It's what I feel about the kind of standardized desecration that passes for 'art' these days. It actually is a kind of immorality because it is an attempt to obliterate meaning from the human form in some way." - Roger Scruton

This kind of thing can be a blessing in disguise. If the Orthodox are the smallest Christian group in Germany, some people who've never heard of it will hear of it. They may ask "what is an icon?", "what is Orthodoxy?", and look into it. Some souls could be saved. But the purveyor of the garbage will likely be forgotten in 15 minutes.

The thing is that Icons are not Art, they are Holy things that should be treated with respect.
The news story speaks as if they are icons, but I was assuming they aren't, that they're just things she made in the appearance of icons. I don't know. Yes it is much worse if they are real icons.
