Is Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit Unforgivable? Hi. I am Baptist, and I was wondering if this page applies to me. Is this what blasphemy really means?
Hello Nick, I disagree with the definition that your article gives for the unpardonable sin.
Here it is:
"Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is to refuse God’s mercy. It is a refusal to repent of sin."
The Bible tells us plainly that the unpardonable sin is unpardonable
from the very moment that it is committed, and a refusal to repent of sin is hardly something that is unpardonable as soon as it is committed as a person could (as many people often do) change their minds and choose to repent at a later time.
Matthew 12
31 Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.
32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.
Mark 3
28 “Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter;
29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”—
30 because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
Such a sin, just like a person who refuses to believe the Gospel when it is first presented to them, only becomes "unpardonable" after a person dies (IOW, if they continue in impenitence or unbelief until the day they die), not when they first commit it.
God bless you
