One of my personal "rules" for 2022 elections is that I will not vote for any candidate, Democrat, Republican, or otherwise, who (to my knowledge) supported government mandates for this vaccine. I don't mind them being pro-vaccine, just not pro-mandate.

Excellent news. Well done Mr Mayor.

You sure this is not too authoritarian? Because authoritarianism often leads to populist outbreaks... And that means trouble.

You are correct that it leads to divisiveness and public outcry. I personally don't think it's too authoritarian, but it does depend on your level of vaccine coverage. For instance here in Victoria, you are banned from most shops and entertainment venues unless you can show proof of vaccination. However now that we have achieved over 90% vax rate in the 12+ population, I'd argue it's time to throw those rules out (quite alot of people agree, and it will probably happen sometime in the next few months). at this level of coverage, the unvaxed don't really matter. They are much more likely to get sick and die, but have minimal impact on the spread.

If someone wants to play Russian roulette with their health in a way that doesn't impact others, then they should be allowed to do so.

It hard, because the ultra-right news media is lying to people. And so, is the ultra-right politicians. What are government supposed to do, if COVID-19 doesn't go away. Because a lot of people are believing lies. We got the Delta and Omicron variant of COVID-19. How many more do we need. We need to be stricter about traveling. Why would ever be fly to go to a country, that isn't 98 percent COVID-19 vaccinated.

A friend of mine is vaxxed, but his wife and daughter are not. They all caught Covid and they all had mere head colds. Why are we in favor of the government, which spends trillions of Covid dollars on political interests, deciding what is best for our health? They're locking people in camps even if they haven't tested positive.

Because the more sensible of us do not consider what happened to 3 randos that you know coupled with some fantasy you hold about spending to equate to public health.

Also, are you aware other countries exist?

I'll see your 3 people with a head cold and raise you 5,260,000 dead.

Yes, this is the thread to talk about the politics of the pandemic. And I'm just not sure that draconian type laws are worth it, if it leads to increased societal disruptions or violence...

Yep, in the pictures found in the link, they're holding signs that say "Liberte", which is a good point. What's better, I wonder, protecting liberty, or going with the science? Where should our priorities lie?

Protecting life is the 1st priority.

I'm going with "both". If the science is good and the priority is education, then most people will choose the vaccinations. For a local example, I work around a number elderly and vulnerable people who also tend to generally be politically conservative. They are largely retired and live in their own homes. They don't have to worry about mandates and being fired from their jobs and the like. And yet, the majority if not all of them chose on their own and/or with their doctors' advice to get vaccinated.

I tend to believe the governments are using COVID as an excuse for grabbing power and hoping there aren't enough people willing to speak up and protest over it. Most so-called anti-vaxxers likely would have chosen the vaccines on their own if the science is good and they saw it as a medical issue rather than a political power grab/government tyranny issue.

I have yet to see anyone offer an example of this alleged "grabbing power" -- can you provide one?
