yep, it does but it's just the nature of turning a very long and intricate novel into a show. I've resigned myself to this fact. I'm sure they will go to Caemlyn and meet Elayne or maybe we'll meet her when Egwene goes to the tower to become a novice.

Being a fan, what did you think about Loial? I'm glad they didn't go full CGI but they should have kept the ears and the long drooping eyebrows. But I can tell he's going to be enjoyable to watch.
I think they did loial well, indeed the strength of the series is capturing the characters of the books.

I think you're right. I mean the story is pretty common, good vs. evil but it's the characters that make Robert Jordan's version so good. I think they gained some time by cutting out Caemlyn so they are using it to develop the characters. I think the mourning scene with the warders was beautiful and is a bonus over and above the books. I think they are hitting all the important events. They don't really need the whole part about Caemlyn to tell the story. They can introduce those characters another way.

Incidentally, if you like character development and great characters then I recommend you read David Weber and John Ringo's Prince Roger series. One of my all time favorites. I have the whole series on Audio narrated by Stephan Rudnicki. Fantastic narrator. It's the story of prince Roger Rameus Sergei Alaxander Chiang MacClintock and his personal Marine guard, the Bronze Batallion of the Emperess' own as they have to fight their way around a whole barbarian planet to get home. If you like battles and strategy and military fiction in general you'll likely love this series. Fantastic characters.

Also John Ringo's Dark Tide Rising series.

For those who have not read any of the books, I'm really curious which one of the 5 you think is the dragon reborn? I promise I won't spoil it for you but I really would like to know.
Well Nynaeve holds the current power ranking. Therefore it probably isnt her. She'll probably ending up running the Bene Gesserit, I mean Aes Sedai. At this point I have to go with Mat, as he's the one who power hasnt yet been revealed. I think they are saving a big reveal.

The first book in the series was well above average fantasy, the 2nd and 3rd pretty good. Books 4-10 were an exercise in grinding never ending drudgery that took all my will to get through. 11 was good and then Jordan died, and I have no interest in reading the last books written by someone else.

Quite liking the tv, decent production values, adequate acting.

Hi Tanj,

I thought the same thing, didn't want to read the ending because it was by a different author. Sanderson did a masterful job. You really can't tell the difference. And the last book is the best of all of them.

I honestly have no idea.

But my reasoning would probably run similarly to this. I've also read some comments online which lead me to believe that in the books there was no suggestion it could be a woman, which rules them out.

Ok, so Moirane and Rand-al are about to enter the forest of sad trees. I cant wait to see whats in there.

But, man there's a lot of stuff that feels arbitrary. Why is Loial along for the journey?
Ogier are the only ones who can read the guiding posts in the ways because the ways were created for them to travel between their steddings. They are always either just outside a stedding or in the Groves of trees that they planted in cities where they worked to remind them of the stedding and stave off the longing which is a disease that they get when they stay outside of the steddings for long. But it was made during the breaking of the world when the male half of the power was tainted by the dark one. So they have fallen dark and are too dangerous to travel anymore. Machin shin or the black wind inhabits them now and it takes your soul. So the Ogier elders forbid their use.

Did you understand the scene with the woman fighting the soldiers in the openning on the side of the mountain?

The fight scene was Rand's birth and adoption story. But I didnt get more than that from it except it was pretty well done, and I usually fight fight scenes boring.

Overall I get the sense that the producers felt like they had to fight for the life of the series from episode 1. Too much too fast. Hopefully by season 2 I'll feel more in this world. But its still fun.

Yes they are skipping a lot. That fight scene was amazing. If that is how they are going to portray the Aiel then I can't wait. Spoiler alert: That women was not actually an Aiel. She was the daughter heir of the queen of Andor which is the kingdom that the two rivers is a part of only it is kind of a forgotten part. Her name was Tigrain and she was told by an Aes Sedai who had had a foretelling that she must go to the Aiel waste and become a maiden of the spear. The Aiel waste is an extremely harsh place and the Aiel are a hard people. Nothing soft or weak survives there. Tigrain was told that if she didn't do this the world would end. So she went. Normally those who venture into the waste are killed by the Aiel but some maidens watched her for days until she collapsed. They gave her water and she told them about the foretelling. They let her try to become a maiden and she did it. Then she fell in love with the clan chief Janduin and became pregnant. When the Aiel crossed over the mountains and went to war with the wetlanders as they called them she went with and she went into labor during the battle outside Tar Valon and went up the mountainside to give birth. Tam found her dead and took the baby and his outlander wife with him back to the two rivers.

At the same time, Moiraine and Suian Sanche were attending the former Amerlin Seat in her chambers in the tower and she went into a trance and had a foretelling. She said she saw the dragon reborn on the mountain. She then keeled over dead and Moiraine and suian were the only ones who knew. They made a pact to find the dragon reborn but to tell no one. Suian became the new amerlin and she sent Moiraine to scour the earth for Rand. That's what she was doing in the two rivers the night that the Trollocks came.

Now the Aiel were portrayed as death walking with or without a weapon and they live by a strict code called Ji e Toh which means honor and obligation. I knew they were fierce fighters but dang, that scene really made it concrete for me. I can't wait to see more of them which we really don't get introduced to them until the third book.

So much water under the bridge though. Oh well, I'm sitting on a beach for a few weeks in January, so it's not like I wont have the time.

I hope you do finish them. Like I said there are two books, I believe it's the ninth and tenth books that are really slow and hard to get through, but it is worth struggling through to get to the last three. Did you see the opening scene of the latest episode? Dang, that was awesome. The only thing is after she killed the first soldier she should have stared the rest down and then raised her veil. That would have been epic. And let's not forget that she was in labor during that scene. But that's how the Aiel are.

It is looking likely that a third series is likely to be commissioned, the second season is already filming. Though for season two Mat has been recast, due to the previous actor not being available.
That is really bad. That's what they did in making that disaster of the Atlas shrugged Movies. They didn't sign the actors until making each installment instead of locking them all in. I guess they didn't have the money to sign long term contracts. I've read that they had a billion dollar budget for this so that is really bad. I don't like what they've done with Mat's character. He is not inherently dark. He's the one you can count on when things go sideways, at least after he is healed from the link to the dagger. I'm not happy with them over that. Mat is my favorite character of all time of the thousands of books I've read. Many things still have to happen to him before he really becomes Mat so maybe they'll have him change in future episodes. His transformation throughout the books is one of the best parts and what he becomes. Perrin too, and Egwenee and Nyneave.

I am a died in the wool hero worshipper and that's what I think I like the most about the series, that everyone is a hero. They all play pivotal parts in the ending.

So have you watched the latest episode? What do you think. There were little hints along the way that it was Rand. I'm thinking of one in particular. I liked the way they did the reveal, going back in time to show what his father said to him while he was delirious and wounded and what the black wind told him and him channeling to help Nyneave in the ways. And then the opening scene with the maiden of the spear fighting the soldiers on the slopes of dragonmount. Also what Min told him that she saw when she saw Rand's father with the heron mark blade in Tar Valon. It was well done. Only Min isn't old enough to have been there when Tam was.

Having never read the books, I'm finding it hard to fill in the gaps of what the show isn't telling us. After the episode I turned to my husband and asked, "So, are we supposed to think Rand is right and he is the dragon, or are we meant to still doubt it?" I didn't have enough context to connect all the dots with the hints or the reveal.

I'm finding the show fairly frustrating; it's clear that the books were much richer and they're trying to keep the plot moving, but I feel like I'm not getting enough to really understand what I'm seeing.
