I've read the books (don't think I finished them all) so I'm interested but don't have Amazon. Hopefully it won't take too long to become available on a service that I do have. I already subscribe too many services so I'm not getting Amazon even though it's tempting.
It's produced by Amazon. They aren't going to stream it anywhere else.

I wish they would go into that more in the show, along with the accompanying world view. It sounds interesting and important. Youre probably steeped in it already from the books.
Robert Jordan explained that he needed time to be circular because he wanted their myths and legends to be based on ours and ours to be based on theirs. I think they'll go into all that as the show unfolds. But basically time is a wheel. The one power comes from the true source and is the force that turns the wheel. It has two halves that work with but also against each other. The male half, called saidin, was tainted by the dark one when the last dragon sealed up his prison. Each turning of the wheel takes 3 or 4 thousand
years. With each turning the dark one tries to break free and break the wheel of time so that he can remake the world in his vision which is of course evil. The taint caused all the male aes sedai to go mad and they destroyed the world with the one power. It had been a near utopia before and people are still picking up the pieces 3 thousand years later.

I don't know if Robert Jordan meant this but I see it as the same battle that has been going on throughout our history. It's basically a battle between Plato and Aristotle. Plato represents the shadow and Aristotle the light. Whenever Plato is the dominant influence things get bad, really bad, and whenever Aristotle holds sway things get better and we start to head towards that utopia. Right now we are under Plato's influence and so things are starting to get bad again. The time we are in now represents the stage of the cycle in the book. Shadow rising.

You can sign up for a 30 day free trial and watch. I want to urge you to finish the series. Books 10 and 11 I think are pretty slow and hard to get through. The last three, written by Brandon Sanderson from Jordan's outline and notes, are phenominal. Truly moving.

Interesting. Thanks for the explanation. I'm going to stick with the show and see where it goes, even though the introduction hasn't been great.

It's definitely interesting. Though by episode 5 it is radically diverging from the source material. So Rand is at the city of the white tower(tar Valon)? Never happened. No Elayne or Caemlyn?
They'll probably introduce Elayne at a later time. I mean we know they're going to have to depart radically from the book, it's almost as long as Atlas Shrugged. It's like 900 pages long. But Elayne is a major character and so far they haven't cut any major characters. We meet Thom way later than in the book too. I didn't like Thom at first but he's growing on me. We haven't met Min either and she's a crucial character. The only one so far that they have cut out is master Luhan and he is a minor character. From the standpoint of a TV show though you want to have new characters to introduce each season.

You say that, but given how problematic the whole Elayne, min, and aviendha however many way is I wonder whether they have all been cut to give an egwene/Rand romance.

Maybe you're right but wouldn't that whole three-way love affair make for better television, especially in this day and age? But that would simplify the story if they did that. But then there is the relationship between Egwene and that other red-headed person. Since Elayne and others aren't included in the cast photos, I'm guessing we won't meet them until next season unless they've been cut. Elayne and Min and Loyale are in every book and as main characters so I'm betting we will meet them in future seasons. I hope so but I've told myself to forget about the books and just enjoy the show. I mean that scene at the end of episode 4 never happened in the book but it was awesome! I liked it better than what happened in the book. I got chills all over when that happened. I watched it like 10 times.

Also, how do guys ride and camp in the woods in spotless white robes and tents? How do they do that???
LOL, I noticed that too. And Lan as well. He goes into battle and only a few wisps of hair are loose and his clothes are spotless. But I kind of like that because it feeds into his whole imperturbable
persona. I keep wondering how he keeps his Hadori on and straight.

Seems like they are deliberately going back to the 60's "Robin Hood" aesthetic of bold, bright, and clean. I dont like it. Unrealistic worlds should be shown realistically.

That's one thing I liked about Lord of the Rings, the attention to detail with the clothes. I didn't like the way they did the tinkers with dreadlocks but hey if you are living in wagons you probably wouldn't have time to fix your hair. Do you think they made those wagons for the show or do you think they are real gypsy wagons from the area they filmed in. I think the Gypsies come from Bulgaria or somewhere in eastern Europe.

In the book the white cloaks are always like that though. They keep their uniforms and armor spit-polished to perfection. I think their armor in the show is kind of cheesy and fake looking, like plastic. I agree with you, they could have spent more time getting the clothes more realistic but I do like that shirt that Perrin wears. I might like to have one like it. I don't like Rand's sheep's skin coat. It should be all worn and blackened around the cuffs like a real shepherd would be. It looks like it came off the rack from Burlington Coat Factory. I agree with you totally.

Interesting question. I couldnt find a pic of the wagons in the actual show. From memory I would say those could be real, with a bit of embellishment. Roma people spread all around Europe but especially Spain and Eastern Europe if I recall. I'm actual in a gypsy music band.

I'm thinking they are real. They just seemed worn like they are used. If they would have been brand new looking it would have been totally unrealistic so I think at leat one or two of them were the real deal. But they supposedly have a budget of a billion dollars so they might have made them specially. They should have spent more on the clothes.

Yay, Loial son of Arent, son of Halan. He's not what I pictured but I like him. It took me by surprise. Also really liked that they showed the brotherhood among the warders. They never really talk about that in the book. Great addition.

It doesnt work to devote half an episode to the mourning and funeral that results from a relationship we barely got to experience. The grief was well written and acted, but there was just a fraction of one previous episode for viewers to experience their bond. Once again, no chance for viewer investment.

Also, how are these white cloaks operating just outside the white tower city??? How is this possible?

The white cloaks are an independent military force. They come from a country called Amador. They are kind of a cross between the KKK and the Nazis. People are afraid of them so they go pretty much anywhere they want to go except for Tar Valon. But they seem to always have a contingent outside of Tar Valon hoping to catch an Aes Sedai or a warder alone. The Aes Sedai are unable to use the power as a weapon except against dark friends or in the last defense of themselves or warders.

I can see why you would think that about the warders without knowing the back story. The warder bond is a weave of the one power. It confers certain things to the warder like faster healing, the ability to go without sleep, the ability to sense creatures of the dark one if they are near, etc. They also feel what their Aes Sedai feels including pain and vice versa. When a warder's Aes Sedai dies they go mad and usually get killed in battle because they just go berserk. Many just ride off and die. If a warder dies, his Aes Sedai goes through terrible, debilitating grief for a time and is unable to touch the one power because she can't find the calm needed. Warders know this before they agree to be bonded.

Reds don't take warders, the other Ajahs usually take one, the greens, who are the battle Ajah, take multiple warders and often marry them. When their Aes Sedai are in the tower they train together and help to train young men who come to the tower hoping to be a warder.

Being a fan of the series it is definitely off-putting seeing them reach tar valin, rather than caemlyn. I can understand skipping baerlon, but it does feel rushed.

yep, it does but it's just the nature of turning a very long and intricate novel into a show. I've resigned myself to this fact. I'm sure they will go to Caemlyn and meet Elayne or maybe we'll meet her when Egwene goes to the tower to become a novice.

Being a fan, what did you think about Loial? I'm glad they didn't go full CGI but they should have kept the ears and the long drooping eyebrows. But I can tell he's going to be enjoyable to watch.
