I see the whole Afghan thing to be a flub. From beginning to end. By the way, did the Afghans buy the equipment from us or did we just give it to them? Do we know?

Equipping our allies is never flub. Abandoning our citizens by pulling out our troops in the middle of the night because the countries government was collapsing was ...... well I just can't give it a descriptor without breaking forum rules.
I have a feeling you know as well as I do that we certainly could have destroyed the weaponry on or before leaving. Storehouses of weapons, ammunition and explosives are not exactly difficult to detonate.

I'm not sure if it was ever discussed as wanting Ukraine as an allied nation - that might be indicated by them never becoming a member of NATO.
Regardless, the West and the US are acting on their own best self interest in keeping them an independent nation.

I agree the withdrawal was poorly handled. The destruction of military equipment under US control is a SOP. I don't know about destruction of ally equipment. Not a situation I have had experience with.

What actions do you propose? {other than equipping NATO with 2nd rate arms we provided to the Afghan Army....}
btw, the only way to avoid an Afghanistan scenario in the Ukraine is to insert NATO/US troops with weapons designed to fight the Russian army (not Taliban guerrilla fighters).

NATO, like most world organizations, is useless when it comes to really putting-up, weren't you paying attention when Trump pointed all that out and at least made many pay a fair share. Biden has probably refunded it all though.
