I live in Bulgaria - where there are mainly orthodox and protestant churches. Very few catholic. I have been to all of these denominations because I don't denominate myself - I am a believer who reads the bible.

However - there is one thing I find common in all churches I have been to. The scripture is being preached, but only for the money. The church leaders constantly intrude on the idea I and the others have to give donations for the church and we have to help with our free labor. It's clear the money from the donations doesn't go to the needy, but goes to the church leaders' pockets. I'm sick and tired of the hypocrisy and lies in the churches, that come mainly from its leaders.

That's why I decided to read the Bible on my own and not attend any church. There may be some honest church leaders, but very very few.

I can't understand how these people preach every day not to steal nor lie, but they are the biggest thieves and liars.

I will speak on the protestant churches in Bulgaria because I have been mostly to them. It is clear that they get a lot of money from the US, England, Germany. Some church buildings look like 5-star hotels. And the pastors are still greedy to get donations from the church members, even though the people that go to church are mostly very poor. I think rich people from the west are doing money laundering and they hire some clever Bulgarians as pastors to help them and give them a percentage of the income. These are not churches - these are sects and I don't want to go there.

Please, give me your thoughts on this. How is it in the US and other countries?

I think it really depends on the church and how open they are with their finances. My church (in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church) is ran by a group (Elders, Deacon, etc.) and is very open with where every dollar donated goes. I have been going to the church for quite some time and I have never heard a sermon on giving donations, I have heard one on donating our time in different ministries, but that is not the same thing.

I have not seen this in our church. Our church takes tithes, but that is a biblical was to support the ministry, to allow ministers to have the freedom to preach the gospel. Our church also runs a community-based support network that assists needy people within our community.

I am not a part of our church ministry, but I have run online outreaches, in the capacity of a ministry. I never take donations, I work full time to provide all finances, and give to the hungry every week.

I think you will find here like minded individuals. I do attend occasionally. I have good brothers and sisters there. I also take communion with them at times.

There is hypocrisy every where, in churches, bars, nightclubs, and at the market. Look at God, not men. As Paul states in Phil, 1:15. ‘Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.’

Kinda got a chuckle out of the money laundering. It’d be a good front.

The same.

In churches I've been in, it's been the norm for audited financial statements, and the budget for the coming year, to be presented to the members each year at the annual meeting, and for members to be able to question what they see.

If a church didn't publish its finances to its members in some way like that, I would be very wary of it.

I live in the US and there are definitely a lot of wolves dressed as sheep here as well but there are also many sheep who are truly of Christ’s flock in my area.

Hello, Zhviko. I think that to have a chance of answering your questions about the situation with Bulgarian churches fairly, we here would need to know what the annual salaries of the pastors are, what it costs to maintain the church building and grounds including utilities, etc., and have some idea of how much money is being contributed by churches in other countries.

You understand correctly. Those who only take are parasites and deceivers. Jesus taught only to give, to sacrifice, to waste oneself for the benefit of others.

But Christ warned in advance that many would come under His name and deceive many. These deceivers will never teach the truth, because they are looking for their own interest and their own benefit.

The truth will be told only by those who are not looking for benefits, but wish you only good. Look for such if you want spiritual growth. But also be ready to sacrifice yourself, and not pull to yourself.
