I just started watching this show and decided to start back at the beginning. I have been impressed by Dr. Daniel Charles, the psychiatrist. Whoever writes his script does a pretty good job of showing how an engaged listener reflect back with empathy. I am trying to model my own listening skills along his example. The main thing is his caring intention. That takes the "canned" edge of his responses. Oliver Platt plays him perfectly.
