• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hey, to whoever reading this, i struggle, A LOT, it is affecting my mental and physical health, so if you have any advice i would really need it.
This year i noticed i struggle with scrupulousity. I obsess over so many things and question is it a sin. I can't seem to realize difference between feelings and conscience so i worry have i commited sin against my conscience.
I started to worry am i eating too much and commiting gluttony and it lead me to lose bunch of weight (now i'm underweight), that lead me to not having period for months.
I worry am i commiting a sin if i sleep longer, study, when i am on my phone, showering, wearing certain clothes and so many more things.
It became so DRAINING, i don't know how long can i tolerate it. When i dont obey that small voice it feels like im commiting a sin.
I really really need help. :/
Im seeing therapist, she is not christian therapist just a regular one, i havent told her about this problem and i dont know should i tell her bc my thoughts are not allowing me.
Somebody, please give me advice. :( thanks

Stop worrying.

Im kidding.

Do you have any hobbies or something nice to do? So you could focus on something else than your thoughts?
Do you read bible? Listening bible or reading bible helps me, if I feel stressed.
I had a little bit similar problem before as you are having now. It’s not easy but you can do it. Also praying is very soothing. You can do this :)

I do read Bible and pray.
But these thoughts just pop up?
For example "should i eat this, am i commiting gluttony, am i commiting a sin if i wear this, have i told i lie, am i too much on phone, am i making an idol out of work, am i sleeping too much..."
So you get the point, these thoughts make me feel like almost everything to me is a sin :(

Jesus loves you. We all sin. Only Jesus was able to keep the whole law, nobody else. Jesus died for our sins on the cross so we won’t need to feel guilty. You are forgiven. Jesus doesn’t want you to be perfect like He is, He loves you as you are. It seems to me that you struggle more with fear, and bible teaches us that when we are made perfect in love, we don’t fear anymore. So focus on loving God because He loves you. Trust in Him. Im sure your therapist can help you out. Have you tried CBT? It could help you. It’s behavioural therapy

That sounds like you weren't committing gluttony.

None of those are sins.

I used to be there too.
I had to really internalize God's word and I had to choose to believe that over my fears. It took several years to really get that down, but it was 100% worth it.

I can see that you have knowledge about part of the picture regarding men and women, and how they should act in a Christian manner.
That's a good thing to have!
Now you need to add some additional pieces to that puzzle:
1. What God wants from us.
Answer: Obedience. I think you've got this one.
2. What should we gain from being obedient?
Answer: knowledge about ourselves, what motivates us, and what is a good result of obedience.
3. How does obedience bring us closer to God and Jesus?
Answer: when we study the events of each of the 7 days of Holy Week, we can see what perfect obedience is, how it originates in perfect love, and how that love produces perfect sacrifice, and ultimate victory.
Ultimate victory is what we are all aiming for in our Christian lives, but it takes a long time and lots of learning to achieve.
So being scrupulous is NOT the goal.
Being humble, and teachable will get you much further on the road to victory than being scrupulous will.
Best wishes to you in your goal!

Most of the things you and many others are concerned about ….God doesn’t give two shakes about…

So the real challenge becomes…. how do you change your thinking from → sin consciousness to Son consciousness.

I won’t pretend to know much about OCD other than two brothers (twins) who had pretty severe case of it …I challenged them both to memorize the first 3 chapters of Ephesians along with a list of other verses regarding their son-ship rights …which they did…….. But they also ended up rememorizing the entire book of Ephesians.

I picked Ephesians because it’s the Magna Carta or the apex of the doctoral epistles, and because I also had committed it to memory. The first 3 chapters are what God has done for us, and 4-6 are the practical application thereof…..It’s not as overwhelming as it seems, because our minds were designed by God to hold the Word of God.

What it did for them (as described by the brothers) was completely heal their OCD ….which is not surprising because the words in the Word… are spirit and they are life. Many times I have seen people who have been so fried by drugs that they couldn’t piece together a sentence…. much less have a coherent conversation…. Get completely healed (delivered) by listening and reading the Word of God.

Knowing your Sonship rights is something you can recall when you have the thoughts that you are sinning or felling less than what Gods Word declares.

5 Sonship rights …Your rights as a child of God

Sanctified - You have been set apart from the world as son or daughter of the most high God.

Justified – Just as if you never sinned.

Redeemed – having Gods incorruptible seed within and having eternal life.

Righteous – we have the righteousness of God.

Reconsolidation - God has committed (given it over) unto us the ministry of reconciliation as an ambassador for Christ.

Following are some verses that proclaim our sonship rights

1Co 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

Phl 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

Rom 4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification

In the originals this verse reads: Who was delivered for our offences and was raised again when we were justified.

Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

Rom 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Rom 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

This better reads …we are at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Rom 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2Co 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

2Co 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

2Co 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

You need to know that you are already forgiven. God is not mad at you. He loves you enough to send Jesus to die for you.

God provided a salvation so good that even we cannot mess it up. He took it out of our hands and provided the perfect remedy Himself.
You need to know that the inner you that you worry and fret about is not the real you. When you accepted Christ, God included you in the death of Christ. Picture yourself hanging on the cross. That's how God sees it. You went to hell because Lord Jesus went to hell. Lord Jesus took all your sin into His body and left it in hell. You, the old sinful you, was also included and left in hell. Lord Jesus rose from the dead. You rose with Him to be a new creation. The old you is dead and buried.

Now Jesus lives in you. However, He will not force Himself on you. You need to choose how you want to live. By thoughts? Feelings? Self will? Or will you allow Jesus to live in you, through and in place of what you were before?

Choose Jesus. Your life will begin to turn around. You may not notice at first, but it will happen. You must spend time in prayer and study of God's word. The Christian life is not automatic. God will respond to us as we seek Him. It will not be easy. But it will be life changing. Ask God to help you come to the place called "The knowledge of the Truth". When you get to that place, nothing can bring you down. If you do sin, confess. It's not a big deal to God. He knows us inside out. Then keep going! If you do that day by day, not looking back or worrying about the future, you will progress. I can say that because of God's word. My own experience confirms it.

If you already know that these thoughts are not correct and the problem is that you just cannot stop them, then:
1. Get regular sleep, get up every day in the same time (very important)
2. Do sports, move, excercise
3. Eat and drink well, try to avoid any vitamin/mineral, carbohydrate, protein, fat disbalances.
4. Be more around people, talk with them, laugh with them, watch movies, care about animals, go outside to get much sunlight and do not give your thoughts time to hunt you
5. Apply minimalism to areas where you are overanalyzing or overworrying.

If you are not rationally sure that your thoughts are incorrect, start with this first.

You write excelent English.

Please read thi from an advice site:-
1. Always expect the unexpected. You can have an obsessive thought at any time or any place. Don’t be surprised when old or even new ones occur. Don‘t let it throw you. Be prepared to use your therapy tools at any time, and in any place. Also, if new thoughts appear, be sure to tell your therapist so you can keep them informed.

2. Be willing to accept risk. Risk is an integral part of life, and as such it cannot be completely gotten rid of. Remember that not recovering is the biggest risk of all.

3. Never seek reassurance from yourself or others. Instead, tell yourself the worst will happen, is happening, or has already happened. Reassurance will cancel out the effects of any therapy homework you use it on and prevent you from improving. Reassurance-seeking is a compulsion, no matter how you may try to justify it.

4. Always try hard to agree with all obsessive thoughts — never analyze, question, or argue with them. The questions they raise are not real questions, and there are no real answers to them. Try not to get too detailed when agreeing — simply say the thoughts are true and real.

5. Don’t waste time trying to prevent or not think your thoughts. This will only have the opposite effect and lead to thinking more thoughts. Studies have shown that you cannot effectively stop or push down particular thoughts. Your motto should be, “If you want to think about them less, think about them more.”

6. Try to not be a black-and-white, all-or-nothing thinker — don’t tell yourself that one slip up means you are now a total failure. If you slip and do a compulsion, you can always turn it around and do something to cancel it. The good news is that you are in this for the long haul, and you always get another chance. It is normal to make mistakes when learning new skills, especially in therapy. It happens to everyone now and then. Accept it. Even if you have a big setback, don’t let it throw you. Remember the saying, “A lapse is not a relapse.” This means that you never really go back to square one. To do that, you would have to forget everything you have learned up to that point, and that really isn’t possible. Also remember the sayings, “Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat,” (F. Scott Fitzgerald) and as they say in AA, “You can always start your day over.”

from:- International OCD Foundation | 25 Tips for Succeeding in Your OCD Treatment

Do talk to your therapist about your problems, she cannot help you if you hide your problems from her.
Do share the above advice with her.

Are your problems a sin or sinful? No they are not.

May I suggest that you sort out a timetable or routine for when you sleep, study, shop, prepare healthy meals, eat, socialise, exercise etc etc etc

I don't want my therapist to think bad about God or christianity (since she is not a christian therapist). Maybe after hearing my faith problems it pushes her away from becoming a christian that's why i havent told her :/

Thank you this is really helpful! :)
I don't want my therapist to think bad about God or christianity (since she is not a christian therapist). Maybe after hearing my faith problems it pushes her away from becoming a christian that's why i havent told her :/

Your problems won't push her away.

:( thanks
My sister, fear not,i have OCD like I told you and you have no absolutely no cause to worry.Listen very closely, gluttony is a Catholic ideology,it’s not specifically mentioned in the holy scriptures,I’m not sure if you are Catholic, but if you are then I can’t speak against it.Gluttony is overeating in very large portions all the time,a perfect example would be like the people you see on the tv show “My 600 pound life” that is gluttony,it’s rooted in a lack of Holy Spirit self control fruit. And like many brothers and sisters have told me,if your worrying-then you haven’t.But I STRONGLY encourage you to eat and keep yourself healthy, being underweight isn’t good(not spiritually but physically) and for a girl(I’m a guy so I don’t know the struggle well) you need to have a menstrual every month. As for your phone,I’d be more attentive to time you spend, just not excessive hours:).For sleeping longer, there is no need for worry,as The lord made us all to grow, and sometimes when we grow we sleep longer, that isn’t a sin, however willful intent of sleeping and being lazy is,which is something you aren’t commiting:).For showering, you need personal hygiene, and showering is important, the Bible even speaks of cleanliness and personal hygiene a LOT,so that should be a priority, showering isn’t a sin:).Studying ESPECIALLY isn’t a sin!,as a matter of fact studying of the Bible is GOOD.As for general studies,it’s ok to further your education,However in my personal opinion,DONT get wrapped up into things like physics or Biology, that will only lead to more intrusive thoughts. And as for certain clothes it’s a middle stance. As long as you aren’t wearing anything sexually provocative(Shirts or dresses that show cleavage,or tight clothing that attracts male attention, your absolutely fine:).I will keep you in my prayers Jelena! God bless!

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been struggling! I've had similar struggles, so I know how it feels. Here are some of my thoughts:
1) In my opinion, talking to your therapist about these issues is wise. I would tell her that you have religious OCD, otherwise known as scrupulosity. If she is trained in treating OCD, she might be able to help you with it. If not, I would consider looking for a therapist who is an OCD specialist. One of the most effective therapies for OCD is ERP, or exposure and response prevention. Here is more information about therapies for OCD: International OCD Foundation | How is OCD Treated?
2) OCD tries to make believe it's our conscience. Another way of looking at it is that it's a super-sensitive conscience. But being more scrupulous, even though it seems "good," can actually be a negative thing. Those of us with OCD tend to be perfectionists, and we try too much to depend on ourselves and our performance instead of God. Dr. Ian Osborn talks about this in some of his blog posts, such as the following: REALISTIC-WORRY OBSESSIONS – OCD & CHRISTIANITY THE INADEQUACY OF OCDers – OCD & CHRISTIANITY
3) Keep learning all you can about OCD, and how to deal with it. Here are a couple of resources that I think would be helpful for scrupulosity (I haven't read these thoroughly, but I skimmed them and they look useful): Coping Statements For Christians With OCD and Scrupulosity – ACCFS Seven Shifts For Beating Religious Scrupulosity – ACCFS I'm also part of a good Facebook support group, which has a lot of people who have experience with religious OCD. Here's the link if you'd like to join us! (It's a private group, so your other FB friends can't see that you're in it.) Christianity and Anxiety Disorders - Let's Talk

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an effective treatment for OCD. have you looked into that? You can get it for free from the NHS.
