Thanksgiving Proclamation
[New York, 3 October 1789]

By the President of the United States of America. a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor—and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation—for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war—for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed—for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted—for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions—to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually—to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed—to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord—To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us—and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New-York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Fascinating. Is there any consensus on what this part (emphasis mine) meant?

"To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us"

Does the word "true" imply the existence of false religion, and did he mean science in the way it's currently understood?

You make a good point. It's a religious observance, particularly Christian. I think it does have roots in pagan harvest festivals. The horrible treatment of Native Americans by the European immigrants is definitely part of the story.

But the real culprit of the American Holiday is Sarah Josepha Hale. ;)

Ok. But the North America Ingenious genocide is real.
Ask me how I know personally.
The original Puritans got along quite well with the indigenous population. Thanksgiving is a holiday to thank God.

George Washington, as you can see in the proclamation, believed in religious liberty for all. Washington also thought that good Christians were essential for the success of our country.

Kinda went downhill from there.

I think you may have the same problem as we do down here with Australia Day. It's meant to celebrate the begining of our nation. But there are discussions about what that day meant, and means, to the original inhabitants.

It's a tough conversation and personally I can see both sides. We have a lot to be proud of. And a lot to be ashamed about. It's difficult reconciling those two aspects of being Australian when one day represents both of those aspects.

I am a product of the Indian Adoption Project (IAP).
My grandmother was born on a Cherokee reservation in the 30s but they didn’t give out birth certificates then on the reservations.
When she got adopted, she got a new birth certificate which they stated her adopted parents race: white.
It’s how they wiped out a whole generation.
Luckily for us, we are able to trace our ancestry back to the Dawes Rolls.
So we’re in that process.

nope:
The First Thanksgiving: A Temporary Peace between Puritans and Tribes
Enslaved Native Americans Played Central Role in 1600s New England Households

Just an interesting read:
Colonial enslavement of Native Americans included those who surrendered, too

And I don’t have a problem with Thanksgiving as a day for thanking God.
Especially that it’s one of the few US holidays that non Christians (even atheists) celebrate and are give thanks to anything (idk at least you tried?)
Believe me: I love and appreciate that.
That’s not the point I’m making here.

The term "religion" had slightly different connotations that it does today.

The word "science" comes from the Latin word for knowledge, and that's how it was used in the past.

George Washington consider Christianity as "true" religion and others religions as not. I don't recall him using the word "false."

Not everything you find on the web is true, a lot is what we call "fake news" or "fake history." As a researcher I try to find original sources. Here is Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation: https://www.sunydutchess.edu/faculty/oneill/OfPlymouthPlantation.pdf
There were warring tribes pitted against each other and clashes with Puritans but the Wampanoag shared their knowledge of planting crops and caring for them as well as shared their food and furs.

Did you even look at the websites I listed? Two are from VOA which is one of the oldest and largest international US broadcasters and the other website I posted was from Brown University.
I am a librarian. Don’t lecture me about fake news or fake history when you can’t even be bothered by looking at what I posted if you call yourself a researcher yet the references I cited are somehow not credible enough for you.

Universities and broadcasters are not immune to political spin and pressures. I like to examine the original documentation from the time in question.

Summary: The real history of Thanksgiving is complex. Neither the pilgrims nor the American Indians were entirely good or evil. Thanksgiving today has become politicized, and the holiday is often claimed to have racist origins, but in reality, it represents a real feast from 1621, where imperfect people set aside their differences and shared a meal together. The history is less racist than you think.

Right.
But original documents can still be skewed in such a way due to our modern understanding which makes it invalid.
I’ll explain it better:
You can look at the original document all day long but unless you look at the larger picture with other documents and other events as a whole, you’re missing the point.

And please stop trying to explain political spin and pressure to me. I’m a digital research librarian. It’s beginning to insult my intelligence. I’m not a smart person but I’m not a complete buffoon, either.
