Dear all,

My name is Michael and I am a French amateur writer working on a novel about a young man traveling in Asia in the seventies and trying to make sense of his life (like in Meetings With Remarkable Men).

In 1979, my character arrives in Kabul, Afghanistan, and meets a Christian movement that tries to evangelize among young drug addicts.
As I heard and read that the Youth With A Mission and the Children of God movements were in Kabul during that decade, I wonder if you know more about this, or about other groups involved in the same kind of activity in the seventies, and especially in the year 1979.

I'm actually looking for information on the details of their stay in Kabul, like their daily life, livelihoods, accommodation, organization, interactions with the administration and the locals, that sort of things.
This kind of information would indeed be very valuable to me because it would help me build a more realistic story.

Thank you to those who will take the time to answer me - and even to others ...

Michael

What would be relevant also includes what the Youth With A Mission and the Children of God could not of completely known at that time.

Christian ministries and the broader world didn't have access to the textbooks that are used in the schools of Islamic law. Now we do, a large majority has been translated into English. There are some things that were not well or at all understood back then about a majority Islamic population. Two of them come to mind from hearing some lectures that quoted from their authoritative books.

It is found that the Sharia view of slander is different. That it's possible to speak any truth, have all the evidence and facts on your side. If it casts Islam in a bad light, then its an injustice being done to mankind and must be punished. Secondly what they refer to as the science of rhetoric. It's permissible to outright lie about the Quran if it means persuading a person or larger audience to adopt Islam as a way of life. The end always justifies the means.

The world would be a much different place if western Ivy league and world renowned schools like Oxford taught these standards. When logic and reason are considered a crime by their major schools of education, it's like landing on an alien planet. That's what those two groups did when their boots hit Islamic soil.

The above and more is presented on this YouTube channel:

While not directly related to your question, there is a show that was produced in French originally. In the States we can watch it on Curiosity Stream, it is called "Afghanistan, 1979: The War that Changed the World". I am sure you can find it somewhere. It is worth a watch if you are interested in the subject.
