Trans woman beaten after being jailed with men, lawsuit against San Diego Sheriff's Department alleges

Is it a good thing, or the right thing that this woman was beaten up after she was placed in her "gone sarnit"/birth gender identity or would it have been safer for her if she would have been placed in her "I identify as this" gender identity?

There is nothing appropriate about a woman (or man) being beaten, regardless of the reason. IMHO she has a good shot at winning in court.

While I don't condone the violence against this trans person, he is still a man and doesn't belong in women's prison.

Demand for Immediate Action to Protect Incarcerated Women in California — Women's Liberation Front

"A 2009 report found 20% of trans-identified men in California are sex offenders, and 50% have committed crimes against persons. Based on the known criminal histories of the men who have been transferred thus far, this study appears to understate the problem. We’re informed that at least one of the trans-identified male prisoners is on death row, and a considerable number of the others are serving life sentences for brutal crimes. We’ve also learned that just recently a new arrival punched his female cellmate in the head so hard that she couldn’t chew for three days."

"....a Swedish longitudinal study found even so-called “gender-affirming” surgery and long-term use of cross-sex hormones did not reduce the male pattern of criminality in trans-identified men. Moreover, most of the men being transferred have not fully taken steps to “transition." Clearly, then, incarcerated women are being subjected to male violence and domination - one of the very dynamics that necessitates separating prisons by sex in the first place."

"Those running the prison system know how dangerous conditions have become for the women in California state custody. Many of the correctional officers have openly acknowledged that they expect the women will be raped and assaulted, there will likely be pregnancies, and, in general, the environment will be ripe for exploitation of the women and challenging to control."

"The vast majority of incarcerated women are survivors of years of abuse: including mental, physical, sexual, financial, and emotional abuse. Many struggle with PTSD, and are trying to learn how to heal and rehabilitate. Women risk serious discipline, including extended sentences, if they defend themselves from physical attack. They are even subject to discipline if they object to sharing a cell with a man. This is causing tremendous fear and turmoil..."

If you're trying to be funny, you really shouldn't be discussing a very serious subject.

Wasn't very funny for the woman who got the crap beaten out of her by the man in pink hair who got paid a lot of money to do it on TV.

It's not right to beat anyone up. With that said people who suffer with dysphoria need to be protected as the weak among us. They are disabled and should not be placed in situations that will create more mental instability. So, no, neither situation is correct. They should not be in the general population with men or with women

She was placed with 3 men. While she looked and dressed as a woman. Of course , she would be beat up. I believe these cop's did this on purpose. So she would get beat up. Maybe Transgenders should have their birth certificate changed also.

It is my understanding that physical violence happens to many people in US prisons. I've been watching some youtube videos about prison, and as I understand it, prisoners have to fight other prisoners or risk getting punished by their affiliates or having everything taken away from them.

It's a rock and a hard place situation with regards to prisons, and there's no one approach that will keep everyone safe.

You stick a Trans-woman in a male prison, the outcome is pretty predictable. They'll rape other males in there, so it goes without saying that someone who "looks much more female" in that environment is basically a sitting duck.

The inverse scenario has presented issues, where Trans-women being jailed with biological women end up abusing them. Thus the reason why after California passed SB 132, women's prisons now have to stock condoms, plan B contraception, and there have been an uptick in rapes as well as just risky sexual activity (even if consensual).

I can sympathize with why a Trans woman (who may be in there for something non-violent like a drug offense) would feel extremely vulnerable in a male prison.

But on the other hand, I can also sympathize with why a non-Trans woman would have some serious concerns about having to share a cell with a much bigger & stronger person (with a penis)

You basically have a predator-prey situation no matter which way you do it.

The only real way to prevent it as much as possible is to have 4 different housing arrangements. ciswomen, cismen, transwomen, transmen.

Or, the ideal scenario, quit locking people up for so much stupid trivial stuff...and for the people who do need to be in a facility for a while, don't have it be a totally dehumanizing environment (which basically creates more predators).

Sort of like the Scandinavian systems...they're still prisons, they're still a restriction on freedoms, but they at least treat them like humans instead of cattle.

You know who doesn't try to beat up someone else for their food? A guy who's allowed to have seconds if he's still hungry. You know who doesn't try to start fights in the yard? A person who's allowed to engage in more mentally stimulating activities and pursue constructive hobbies?

If we treated our prisoners like this (this is Norway), we'd probably have far less problems, in general, within our prison systems.

When Rehabilitation is the goal instead of just "they did something bad, so I want to see them suffer", prisons look like this

...instead of how they look in the US.

Complete garbage.

what your report found was that 20% of the transsexuals in a single California prison (not the general public) in 1983 were registered sex offenders and if you take the time to look up the study referenced you get to find out that this makes for a total of 3 individuals.

Wow people in prison are often violent. What a shock. How is this representative of transsexuals? it isn't.

"....a Swedish longitudinal study found even so-called “gender-affirming” surgery and long-term use of cross-sex hormones did not reduce the male pattern of criminality in trans-identified men.
what the study actually said: "Criminal activity, particularly violent crime, is much more common among men than women in the general population. A previous study of all applications for sex reassignment in Sweden up to 1992 found that 9.7% of male-to-female and 6.1% of female-to-male applicants had been prosecuted for a crime.[33] Crime after sex reassignment, however, has not previously been studied. In this study, male-to-female individuals had a higher risk for criminal convictions compared to female controls but not compared to male controls. This suggests that the sex reassignment procedure neither increased nor decreased the risk for criminal offending in male-to-females. [/quote]

Obviously time for his, hers, unisex cells.

I agree. Is it wise to put multiple people in a cell when any one of them could be a really dangerous individual and a threat to the others.

Your contempt for women is even more obvious than usual here.
