There's many and nuanced reasons for it, but there's significant benefit in speaking English over Russian, German, or even Mandarin in today's world. However, if one were to immigrate to a country where English wasn't the dominate language, I think it would behoove them to learn the common language of the area they are in. If I moved to Mexico for example, I'd learn at least some basic Spanish before I went and attempt to assimilate how and where appropriate to aid in my own social cohesion.
