To compare, entering the waiting room of Doctor Orpax, one of the top physicians of Ferenginar, costs two strips of latinum. That's about 200 Dollar. One would assume the fee for a lesser doctor would be lower.

So, congratulations, USA. You are officially more than 3.5 times as greedy as the Ferengi from Star Trek.

If she wasn't seen she doesn't owe anything. Either her health insurance people should deny it or she should get an attorney.
Apparently the hospital is "in communication" with her regarding the bill, which has nothing to do with the hospital seeing how inane this is and everything with this story making the news.

I sat in an ER for 6 1/2 hours, they checked my temp, blood pressure, took two vials of blood and tried to charge me $3400. They told me they’d call me when the results were ready so I called a ride home. They called me later than night asking where I was at. I told them I’m at home. They said why did you leave. I said you told me you would CALL me when the results were ready, so I went home. I had already been sitting there 6 1/2 hours doing nothing and was already feeling better long before I left. I’m actually glad they didn’t treat me, no telling how much that might’ve costed. So I refused yo pay the bill for about 2 years until they finally agreed to cut it in half so I ended up paying them $1700.

You should have flown to canada. Not only would you have been treated quicker, but it would have been cheaper as well.

I also had a hospital charge me $710 for a nurse to check my temperature then the doctor asked me about 10 questions and sent me home. I had just gotten over the flu back in Feb 2019 and the whole COVID thing was just blowing up so my company told me I couldn’t return to work until after I had gotten tested for COVID. So the only place I could find that would do testing that day was an ER so I went in they took my temp, asked me about 10 questions and said your not a candidate for testing. About a month later I received a bill for $710, which I disputed and they reduced it to $132 which I thought was still a bit high but not enough to refuse payment.

My mother got both of her eye lenses replaced because of a cataract. The total bills with two operations, material, several preparatory visits and lab came up to slightly under 3000 euro. The insurance is covering the entire cost.

MY mom had half a hip replaced AND had to deal with colon cancer ALL since COVID started (March 2020).

She paid 275$ for a private MRI for her colon (our terrible govt. GUTTED health care services for no good reason and she would have had to wait 8 months).

Otherwise, not a single cent. She's 78. Had she lived in the US i'd wager she would have bankrupted her/our family to not die from one or stop terrible suffering from the other (growths inside her hip joints).

She would have had Medicare, starting at 65. Most hospitals take Medicare as full payment...many Doctors do as well.

It's probably for the Triage Nurse, vital signs...that type of stuff.

700 dollars for a nurse not having seen you slump out of your chair?

Nothing in the world is fair, I don't know what you mean by a scam?

Actually, a lot of things in the world are fair. It's only those who profit from unfairness who want you to accept unfairness as unavoidable.

When the hospital bills medicare for something that it shouldn't be billed for, it's the american taxpayer who has to foot the bill, doesn't he?

Story time!

While skiing in Utah a little more than 10 years ago, an uncle suffered a major head injury. He required emergency neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery due to clotting issues. Because of all of the checks my uncle was undergoing, they also discovered early throat cancer, which required another series of operations.

The standard of care was fantastic, probably the best in the world. No complaints about the doctors or any of the hospital staff.

The bill for his care was close to $2 million which included a low altitude charter flight back to Australia. All of this was eventually covered by insurance - both travel insurance and private health cover - but only after a MAJOR legal fight taking nearly 3 years (uncle used to be a lawyer, which helped). Horrible time was had by all.

We all thought things were over. But about three months ago, a new bill for $78,000 arrived from the US.

During the cancer operation, some samples were biopsied and put in freezer storage. After 10 years, the samples were destroyed. The hospital is now seeking to bill my uncle for 10 years of freezer storage for the six samples, along with destroying them. And, they're seeking to bill him for the original processing of the samples from 10 years ago.
