Better article with background

A federal grand jury in California on Tuesday indicted Nebraska Republican Rep. Jeff Fortenberry on charges of lying to federal investigators and another crime in connection with a probe about illegal campaign donations provided by a foreigner, prosecutors said in a tweet.

The announcement of the indictment in Los Angeles federal court came hours after Fortenberry, in an unusual YouTube video featuring his wife, dog and 1963 Ford 100 pickup truck, revealed he expected to be indicted for allegedly lying to FBI agents.

Nothing but a politically motivated witch hunt. Don't believe the lies the media is telling you - do your own research.

The article is about him being indicted. Are you saying that him being indicted is a lie? And come on.. when you say "do your own research", it just means "don't do any research, just listen to someone else that says differently from this source".

Nebraska Rep. Jeff Fortenberry found guilty of lying to the FBI

A federal jury on Thursday convicted Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) on three felony counts for lying to federal investigators about illegal campaign contributions from a foreign billionaire.

“After learning of illegal contributions to his campaign, the congressman repeatedly chose to conceal the violations of federal law to protect his job, his reputation and his close associates,” U.S. Attorney Tracy L. Wilkison said in a statement on Thursday. “The lies in this case threatened the integrity of the American electoral system and were designed to prevent investigators from learning the true source of campaign funds.”

Chagoury [the Nigerian billionaire] made an agreement with federal prosecutors in 2019 and paid a $1.8 million fine.

Fortenberry is appealing (in the legal sense).

recent Trump rally

Trump: In a great state Nebraska, a congressman is being put in jail over a few dollars that he possibly didn’t know anything about. A few thousand dollars… I don’t know him well.. it was over a very small amount… over a number of thousands, like 20 thousand…

Trump has no respect for the small-scale criminals that get caught.

And when you think about it... is availing yourself of illegal foreign aid in an election really a crime? Foreigners have free speech rights too.

Prosecutors had only asked for six months of prison, but it does seem light. After all, we know how important election security is.

In case you were worried about Jeff's future:

Former Congressman Starts New Job 11 Days After Jury Finds Him Guilty On Felony Charges

The Nebraska politician had a connection with New York-based Practice Management of America Inc. [the company that hired him] while in office. Since January 2018, he has held shares of the private company in his IRA account. His wife also has a stake in the company. Employees of Practice Management of America, who don’t tend to be big political donors, contributed $16,000 to Fortenberry’s campaign between 2018 and 2022.

Conviction of former congressman Jeff Fortenberry thrown out

An appeals court on Tuesday reversed a conviction that led to the resignation last year of former congressman Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.), ruling that he was not tried in the right venue on charges of lying to federal agents about illegal campaign contributions from a foreign billionaire.

Fortenberry’s trial in Los Angeles “took place in a state where no charged crime was committed, and before a jury drawn from the vicinage of the federal agencies that investigated the defendant.”

Thom Mrozek, a spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles, emphasized in a statement that “the ruling does not preclude a retrial on the charges that … Fortenberry made multiple false statements to federal agents.”

The charges stemmed from a 2016 fundraiser held in Glendale, Calif., for the congressman’s reelection. [But the lying happened in Nebraska.]
