  • Jacqueline Kennedy tops a new poll of America's favorite first ladies
  • Michelle Obama and Nancy Reagan were close in contest for second and third
  • Zogby Analytics polled a sampling of Americans for their thoughts on the past 12 women who have served as first lady
  • Jill Biden came in near the middle
  • The bottom three were Pat Nixon, Melania Trump and Hillary Clinton
Jacqueline Kennedy tops a new poll of America's favorite first ladies while current occupant Jill Biden comes in near the middle and Melania Trump was second from the bottom.

The results were based on how many of the 5,437 likely voters said each of the First Ladies was great.

Kennedy, who became a subject of public fascination after the assassination of her husband Jack Kennedy, came in first with 65%.

The Kennedys were seen a glamorous young couple when they entered the White House in 1961 and the interest in Kennedy, who later married Aristole Onassis and became known as 'Jackie O,' continued to her death in 1994.

In the recent past perhaps, but first lady luminaries such as Abigail Adams and Eleanor Roosevelt are certainly near the top all-time. Lady Byrd Johnson got rid of all the signs that cluttered up our highways. That's pretty amazing all by itself.

Most, myself included, know little about our first ladies.

What surveys like this one really show is that the people polled have an opinion, whether good or bad, only about the most recent contenders for whatever status the poll asked about.

For all we know, the greatest "first lady" of all time was the wife of some 19th century president, but of course those polled wouldn't know it.

I don't understand the popularity of Michelle Obama; she always struck me as a woman who could be meaner than cat-water skimmed when she wanted to be. I suspect it has to do with her race, nothing more.

Likewise, I also don't understand the antipathy towards Melania Trump---she was always graceful, cultured, quiet, and dignified. I suspect the ill feelings towards her are merely a bleed-over of the Left's hatred for her husband.

Satan's sister, or Hillary Clinton, should be at the bottom of the list, AFAIC. Laura Bush I liked; Nancy Reagan I liked. Barbara Bush was like everybody's mom. :)
