I've heard of the term 'sun dog' but I've never seen one. Until today I had no idea what they looked like.

Are these photos what you would actually see or is part of the image caused by flare/reflection in the camera lens?

Yes indeed some may not be so intense, you might have seen the less intense ones like this a sun dog nonetheless. I have seen a ton of the less magnitude ones.

I looked up 'sun dog' to see what caused them. It seems you need ice crystals in the atmosphere. That explains why I've never seen one. Where I live the climate is rated as sub tropical - it doesn't get that cold.

Argg :(, that's a bummer, i live in a mid range area per say between the equator and the upper north, might be a reason i only see the less intense ones not a lot of ice crystals in the atmosphere but enough to produce smaller versions.
