Well, basically, that’s what the Orthodox texts recommend. It is merely that we need to avoid attributing to ourself credit for the progress we make, because that becomes Pride, which unravels our progress.
I feel that we can attribute appropriate credit to ourselves that acknowledges that we have improved etc. as long as we attribute to others their merit including G-d.

Pride is selfishness, and then you do not lay your life down, you keep it and then lose it..

John 12:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

I think this needs to be mentioned in this thread as I am not seeing it here.

The Bible’s definition of sin is breaking the law of God. 1 John 3:4, Romans 3:20, Romans 7:7 Selfishness is the root of all sin - doing our will over the will of God.

Psalm 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

God bless!

Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. BY WHAT LAW ? of WORKS? Nay: but BY THE LAW OF FAITH.

Galatians 5:14 FOR ALL THE LAW IS FULFILLED IN ONE WORD, even in this; Thou shalt LOVE thy neighbour as thyself.

Here comes pride, BY MANS DISPUTES...

Proverbs 13:10 ONLY BY PRIDE COMETH CONTENTION: but with the well advised is wisdom.
