He's mostly known for his ultra-short pontificate. But there's much more to know.

With the October 13 approval from Pope Francis of a miracle attributed to the intercession of John Paul I, the pope of just 33 days is now cleared for beatification.

Vatican News offered a short profile of him, which we excerpt here:

I would like the crazy speculations surrounding his death to be settled first. But maybe an inquiry into declaring him blessed would be a way to settle that too.

I thought all that was resolved?

Maybe. Yet a bevy of conspiracy theories abound concerning his death. Perhaps, as conspiracy theories, those can never be resolved.

I've found myself wondering lately what kind of papacy he would've had, his nickname suggests he was a genuinely joyful man. I'm curious to know more about his theology...personally I'm at least mostly convinced by the theories that he was assassinated. So I'm inclined to think the Sankt Gallen Mafia wanted him out of the way because he was a moral and theological obstacle to their agenda.

Maybe he was poised to be a great one in the line of Leo XIII and Pius X and that was a problem for them.
