Or ditches the Christian Faith. Dave Armstrong goes through the minutes of the reasoning. I have never heard of
Audrey Assad. Apparently she is, or was, a big name in music, at least for Christians. She's done with all that God stuff now, concluding that the modern Faith of Science has debunked all that made up folk tale gibberish we call religion. At the end of the day, that's why she left.

For all the unpacking Dave does, and he does an admirable job, I think it's simple. She no longer believes and, most likely, hadn't believed for some time. A great many in our churches likely don't anymore. They can't bring themselves to do what she's done because they don't know where else to go. Thinking of the implications of a religionless world is terrifying. This is all you get, then a feast for maggots and your objectively valueless life is forgotten about in a generation and that's it? So they hang on, not believing it in their gut of guts, until a chance to bolt finally appears.

Oh, we have that secular paganism, that 'heavenly birthday' and 'we pray to something' or such at times of crisis. Just enough fluff to paste over the implications of a truly secular universe. But it's not much, and means less. Therefore many are no doubt where she was. She may give this or that reason, the Church is thus, or the Church judges, or the Church intolerant, or hypocrites as good as always.

But that's all rubbish. From non-religious hypocrites to intolerant atheists, the idea that these problems in the Church aren't found anywhere else is demonstrably false. After a few days in the real world, it isn't difficult to discover in the fields of secular living the same problems.

Apostasy of the last days is written. We need not be surprised.

Well to be fair, believing is difficult when you look at what's going on in the World. Specifically how America is going straight to hell. I don't blame people for losing faith, I wrestle with it every day especially now that I don't get to go to mass every day anymore, but it's made the times when I do go to mass much more special.

Belief is difficult. That's why the story about Jacob wrestling with God was in the OT. He didn't literally wrestle God, he wrestled with his faith. At least that's how it always touched me when I read it.

Where have you been

Banned for a month for "encouraging violence" (READ: stating that Christians need to actually physically fight back against the Maoist revolution that is taking place in America).

Also got a full time job that is paying pretty well and have been working a solid 40 a week. Much better than sitting around trying to collect SSI, I make like quadruple what I would have been paid by disability.

Yeah having money again and being busy is great. It may not be a glamorous job, nor a prestigious one, but it keeps me busy and puts money in my pocket for my vinyl habit. Unfortunately I have to work a lot of weekends, so I don't get to go to mass every Saturday the way I used to, but I just go on my days off during the week now. But every cloud has a silver lining, so getting to go to mass feels more special now and I appreciate it more.

Next time I get a Sunday off, I'm going to go to TLM again. I miss that and have been ruminating over it ever since I went. I think I'm the only person at my job who goes to church at all. The Blessed Mother really came through for me, because one Saturday I was praying the rosary before mass that I'd be able to get a job and then on the way home, I stopped and applied at the place I now work and was offered the job two days later, for what I was making doing way harder work.

I’m curious to what you are doing

Believe it or not, I'm working at McDonalds and getting paid substantially more than people who have been there longer because I have an open schedule and work whenever they want me to rather than just working at specific times. It's hard work; you have to be really on the ball and quick. I talk to people over the headset all day taking orders and making McCafe items, so I'm actually working two positions at once and I'm starting to get pretty good at it. Having said that, it's physically easier than installing windows and sliding glass doors and I'm actually better at it, so I'm going to shoot for management once I've been there for a while because management gets paid good money (Their GMs make $55k a year to start, with eligibility for up to $25k in bonuses a year).

I was desperate for a job, they were desperate for workers, they pay me as much as I was making doing construction (and in reality, more because I work 40 hours a week there). I get paid 50% of my wages every day after I work a shift and the other 50% gets direct deposited on paydays, so I always have money in my pocket so long as I work the day before. I swore after Culver's that I'd never go back to fast food but I've realized that it's the one thing I'm actually really good at doing.

The other good thing is that McDonald's will promote ex-cons to management. One of my managers got out of prison a year ago and is making at least $15/hour (could be as much as $18... which for a single guy with no kids and no real bills, isn't anything to laugh at for me). Granted I'm not an ex-con, but I do have a felony on my record now so finding a job that will put up with that and actually pay me well is difficult.

Considering that my mom & I are going to move to upstate NY in another year or two (she's retiring after Christmas), I figured that it was a good idea to take a job with a company that is literally all over the country so that when the time comes to move, I can just transfer to the store nearest where we're going to live. Like I said, I really needed a job and had prayed about it, and decided to just get over my feelings about going back to fast food and apply. I got an interview the day after and was offered the job immediately because for some reason, nobody wants to work. It's not easy work, but it's less physically demanding than construction and is paying me the same hourly as the construction job I was doing. It's a lot of being on my feet and rushing around, and a lot of talking to not the most savory people the town has to offer, but it's gotten me some things that I've wanted already so I'm going to stick with it.

That's good to hear. I don't know what their policy is in Australia, but once someone gets a criminal record, it can be very difficult to get a job on their release. All that does is make it more likely they'll go back to prison, which costs the taxpayer a lot of money.

You don't even need to have gone to jail. Just a felony record can be enough to make it very difficult to get work.

I lifted the following "Table 1" from this source. I modified it a bit to make it easier to read. The average cost per Australian prisoner per year is about $61,176. That's more than a lot of them would earn if they had jobs. They could be employed on a subsidy and it would cost less.

https://www.aic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-05/rr_05_240418_2.pdf

Table 1: Average cost of imprisonment (sentenced period; 2014–15 dollars)
Cost item Average value per day Average value per prisoner

Costs

Net operating expenditure $42,006.49
Capital costs $9,299.02
Lost productivity (paid work) $9,725.85
Lost productivity (unpaid work) $6,203.07
Workplace disruption and replacement $6,179.05
Prison assaults $406.73

Savings
Reduced government payments $4,718.69
Incapacitation effect of imprisonment $1,406.36
Value of work completed in prison $5,196.10
Reduction in illicit drug use by prisoners$409.65
Reduction in alcohol use by prisoners $910.55

Total net cost of imprisonment $61,178.86

I feel you! I don't have a felony, but I have a Domestic Battery with Physical Contact and Criminal Trespass of Residence on my record; both misdemeanors. But since it was violent in nature, it's the same as having a felony, especially with workplace violence being so common these days. I've interviewed at many places, been offered the job, and then before my start date I receive the news that, after receiving my background check, they rescind their offer. I'm sure that it doesn't have solely to do with the fear of workplace violence, but the assumption that I must be a woman beater. The reality is that I went after my pedophile step dad who severely abused my brother and me. This was nearly 4 years ago.

Thank God that the company I recently applied for let me explain myself, and that God paved the way for me to get this new job. I'm making more than I've ever made before - $21.50/hr, with 20 hrs of OT each week, putting me at 60 hrs per week. That's a lot of time spent at work, but at that wage, and with the difficulty for someone like me finding a good job, it's more than worth it. This company has no idea how absurdly loyal I will be to it.

I just found out today that my manager that is the ex-con, was in the can for 5 years straight for having two ounces of heroin and an illegal gun (he was already a felon). If he can be made management, there's no reason why I can't work my way up to that point and I'm going for it.
