The mystery of Communion is Orthodox
Does anybody teach that? I've never heard of it.I said outside of Orthodoxy. For instance does Orthodoxy teach that you absolutely must take the Eucharist on a daily basis?
Does anybody teach that? I've never heard of it.
No, they're not adding to the scriptures. Jesus said to "do this in memory of me", which infers that it's a memorial of his self sacrifice, and also, how his self sacrifice is the necessary food for our souls so that we may walk in his Spirit. The Eucharist is the thanksgiving for Christ.I believe that the bread and wine are actually the body and blood of Christ. I don't see any shame in it. Some will go as far to say we are bringing shame to God for thinking it is his body and blood.
Jesus did not say it was symbolic. Are they adding to the word?
Not that I know of. But there's probably some people who believe that they absolutely must do it daily. That's my example of going too far with it and turning it into an idol so to speak.
One should commune as much as possible but also with reverence and preparationNot that I know of. But there's probably some people who believe that they absolutely must do it daily. That's my example of going too far with it and turning it into an idol so to speak.
Are you saying the communion is a mystery to the Orthodox? The mystery of Communion is Orthodox
But you're not getting it if you think it's attained by eating as much flesh and drinking as much blood as often as possible. It's about picking up our cross daily so as to follow after him that leads to life. He is the Truth and the way. Wherefore Paul taught that the communion of the saints in the blood of Christ is his body on earth and all are partakers through the Gospel.Well, if Christ says He gives life then don't you think you should get it as much as possible?
I am therefore in captivity to Christ's WordThe perceived problem with taking the bread literally as his body, is when people are persuaded that they have received the real food and drink that Christ is, when in fact they never did. In that sense such a teaching actually keeps people in captivity.
In John 6 Jesus is alluding to the death through crucifixion and the horrific suffering later to be endured by our Lord, as pertains to his blood being real drink. And so also is the wine mixed with water alluding to his suffering death on the cross. Which is why it is the sign of the sacred thing, (a sacrament). And therefore his body is real food pertaining to the knowledge of God come in Person into the world, 2 Corinthians 4:6 . That's why Jesus said as the Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. Therefore it's understandable why he said, "Whenever you do this, do it in memory of me".I am therefore in captivity to Christ's Word
John 6:52-58
The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever.”
Er, no.In John 6 Jesus is alluding to the death through crucifixion and the horrific suffering later to be endured by our Lord, as pertains to his blood being real drink. And so also is the wine mixed with water alluding to his suffering death on the cross. Which is why it is the sign of the sacred thing, (a sacrament). 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
Do you believe the Lords' supper is a memorial of Jesus' death on a cross as a propitiation for our sins, or not?Er, no.
Well, if Christ says He gives life then don't you think you should get it as much as possible?
I already gave you my answerChrist didn't say the Eucharist is the only way He gives life, or that one should binge on the Eucharist. Remember you're arguing with my having said people who believe they absolutely MUST do so on a daily basis. Not that they want to. But that they absolutely HAVE to.
Do you believe we absolutely MUST take the Eucharist daily? Yes or no?
No, it is not a requirement. It is wonderful to do so, as is regular daily prayer. Some people lead truly holy lives. As I recall Pope John Paul II went to confession every day. No, he did not have to. Some people are compelled to go to mass every day, like the hero on 9/11 who foiled the attack against the White House. He had a premonition and started attending daily mass.Christ didn't say the Eucharist is the only way He gives life, or that one should binge on the Eucharist.
