Inside America's broken supply chain

"supply headaches that were viewed as temporary when the coronavirus pandemic began now are expected to last through 2022."

have you started your Christmas shopping before it's too late and nothing you want is available?

Handmade gifts are greatly appreciated.
This supply issue might just save the world.
Or your marriage at least.

If we had a president who could think farther than 2+2=5 he would have already called out the truck drivers in the National Guard and other service branches.
Yeah, that’s what we need. Soldiers who drive military vehicles trying to drive big rigs.

I guess many of the drivers that got laid off during Covid have not come back. They found work elsewhere, went back to school, stayed home with the kids, etc.

I would get the Fed involved except for things concerning health and sefety. The laws of supply and demand should prevail. If there is a product someone wants, somebody is going to find a way to get it to them.

There’s not a trucker shortage. There’s a good trucker shortage. Plenty of bad ones that if hired, cost the company more because of insurance issues.

To deliver toilet paper and Xboxes? As Americans, we should modify what we think constitutes a national emergency.

As things get hard to obtain, someone will start a company that specializes in organizing difficult deliveries.

I can see that. The veteran drivers are probably working for the highest bidders. It's funny you should say that because I just started investigating classes for long-haul drivers. Everywhere I go people are saying they can't get this or that random thing. So I thought "self, there must be a need for drivers."

It is far more than the lack of good truck drivers. From that article in the OP:

For goods to move seamlessly from overseas factories to American addresses, the oceangoing vessels, shipping containers, cargo terminals, truckers, chassis providers and railroads all must work together, like runners in a relay race. If equipment gets stuck at any point, delays ripple along the entire chain.

Yet the United States is "decades behind" foreign ports in getting carriers, terminals and shippers to provide each other access to commercial data for planning purposes, said Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. Concerns over data privacy, business secrets and security have resulted in a fragmented approach. Individual ports operate as separate fiefdoms rather than as part of a national system.
If the problem is out in the ocean, lack of truck drivers can't be blamed as the cause.

Then there is a chip shortage causing problems in the auto industry. This is a good explanation:

Apparently you don’t know the difference between driving a military vehicle and a big rig. They aren’t the same.

There is. My company has 200 trucks and pays really well. But we are 50 drivers short.

I know that. I'm sure the military would give CDL training before they put them in the big rigs. I think even if they get special training, Christmas presents aren't exactly a national emergency.

In my small amount or research (google), I saw adverts saying they pay $900 a week during training which they also pay for. I don't know what all the requirements are but they make it look attractive.

The trucks in the military drive differently. And they generally don’t have 53’ trailers behind them, so backing is way different. There’s no need for the military to train soldiers to drive civilian vehicles.

Some companies are starting to have paid training. The need is great.

can't compete with husband

he's making first floor bedroom
framing & electric done
drywall up- mudding stage now

With practice you can compete using skills you have.

When I do work like that, a lawn chair with an appropriate beverage
is extremely rare and very difficult to arrange while I'm working.

Have you noticed that the National Guard seems to the new national Temporary Employment Agency? Vaccine mandates kick in and a bunch of doctors and nurses are fired, and the National Guard is called in to replace them. Police get overwhelmed by rioters, and the National Guard gets called in. When election polling places are short-staffed, the National Guard is called in. Now there's a shortage of truck drivers, and what do people want? The National Guard to be called in.

Trump actually brought that up, but the military explained to him, exactly what you're saying..

Trump has nothing to do with this.
Stay on topic.
