I never throw much away, only if I absolutely have to
I have a quart of buttermilk that expired a month ago.
Pork ribs that have been at the bottom of the freezer for years, color is very good just like yesterday's meat.
So what do you think?:)

Eat the lot.

Just think of it as a natural laxative and emetic. :(

I was thinking the same thing. I've drank old buttermilk before and tasted no difference but it was never that old but a plus is it has not been opened yet. Nothing to contaminate it so far.

Boil the pork in the milk, check the Old Testament for approval.

When it's that old, I'd get rid of it.

I know you can bake with older dairy products, but I'm not seasoned enough at it to know the threshold so I err on the side of safety. Food poisoning is not fun.
Boil it long enough and even roadkill is safe.

And buttermilk is soured in the first place, right?

I would cook it and see... if it's been frozen for a long time there may well be freezer burn causing it to be inedible but you won't know if it looks fine until you actually cook it.

It shouldn't make you sick, but you won't want to eat it if it did get freezer burn...

It looks so fresh and new and it's wrapped in that heavy plasiic they use now that a knife has a hard time getting it opened. You all haven't convinced me yet.:)
Is the pack loose, with air inside? If not vacuum packed, you can pretty well count on it to be freezer burned.

However, it wouldn't hurt you to taste it, just to see. Either way, boiling it to death will make it harmless, as far as germs.

Meat and other foods with freezer burn are still safe to eat. Freezer burn draws out moisture and flavor. This affects the quality. ... But don't eat meat if it has a bad smell or other signs pointing to spoilage.

If freezer burn is noticable ... I shave off the burn and use in stews ... thus you get flavor and moisture back in. I'd toss out the buttermilk.

Buttermilk is already cultured. As long as the container is not bulging ridiculously and/or rock hard it's probably okay. The date on American dairy products is a suggestion rather than a rule.

Toss the meat. It might be suitable for animal feed if you boil it. But I wouldn't serve it to my kids or a guest.

I used to do food prep for restaurants. Which included taking food health and safety classes. So if food isn't fresh enough, out it goes.

When in doubt, this it out.

Keep hot foods hot or refrigerate immediately.

Be very careful with canned goods. A tiny breech from a dent or a pull tab lid can let in bacteria.

I always wondered why can foods were a no-no

Caned foods are fine as long as they're not dented. Even with dents they're probably alright.

Although I got pretty bad food poisoning from a can of sardines once. I figure the seal on the pull tab must have been compromised and bacteria got in.

You have never had food poisoning, apparently. If you have a doubt, do without. I won't let mayonnaise see air for more than 13 seconds. Bad luck. Throw it all out, go to the market every day, greet the folks, eat fresh daily. ;)

I've had food poisoning, almost died. Cost more than $20 dollars round trip to the store 3 miles away. One trip a month is allowed in my budget. Pork ribs are expensive.
